Job Overview:

This is a highly responsible role involving technical work as an Official Court Reporter for the Honorable Judge Knisely of the 13th Judicial District.

Duties include attending court sessions, capturing a verbatim record of proceedings using a stenograph machine and computer-aided transcription software. Transcripts are prepared and distributed following court rules and state statutes, with considerable independent judgment exercised by the court reporter. Job performance is reviewed by the judge or court administrator.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for capturing and preserving a verbatim record of court proceedings using a stenograph machine and CAT software.
  • Set up, test, and monitor recording equipment in various court locations.
  • Maintain a detailed record of all communications for transcript accuracy.
  • Ensure clear communication during proceedings and assist with playback requests.
  • Remain focused and attentive during all court sessions.
  • Utilize computer software for transcript preparation.
  • Transcribe, proofread, and distribute transcripts.
  • Archive recordings and files as per Judicial Branch policy.
  • Provide coverage for other judges and handle transcript requests.
  • Offer administrative support as needed.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily conducted in courtrooms, hearing rooms, or office settings and may involve virtual platforms like Zoom. Some travel may be required. Court reporters may keep transcript income as per guidelines.

Physical Demands:

The role entails extended periods of listening, concentration, and keyboard or stenograph machine operation. Some lifting and transporting of equipment may be necessary.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:

Preferred certifications include Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) and Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR), with continuing education units as per NCRA guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Preference for graduates from an approved court reporting program.
  • Previous courtroom reporting experience is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Relevant experience can substitute for formal training, demonstrating strong typing skills and knowledge of court procedures.
