As a Special Education teacher, your role involves instructing students with diverse learning, mental, and emotional challenges. You will tailor lessons to meet the specific needs of students with varying disabilities.

  • Assess students to understand their capabilities and areas for growth
  • Deliver instructions to the whole class or small groups
  • Evaluate student assignments to track their progress
  • Engage in regular communication with parents regarding student development
  • Provide individualized support to students, focusing on enhancing their strengths and addressing weaknesses
  • Prepare students for standardized state tests
  • Establish and maintain classroom rules
  • Supervise students during non-class time such as lunch or detention

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Hold a valid New Jersey Teacher of the Handicapped License or Teacher of Students with Disabilities certification
  • Experience as an Elementary School Teacher
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching in special education
  • Familiarity with special needs students and their families
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with various audiences
  • Demonstrate creativity, flexibility, and persistence in managing challenging learning and behavior scenarios
  • Ability to assess, observe, and document student performance, behavior, and social well-being
  • Utilize innovative teaching methods that enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Prioritize engaging, rigorous, and real-world learning experiences for students
  • Maintain effective classroom management and enforce school rules
  • Participate actively in a supportive professional environment that encourages collaboration and continuous improvement
  • High proficiency in academic subjects and a history of academic success
  • Display self-motivation and teamwork abilities
  • Facilitate proactive communication with colleagues to support student needs
  • Adhere to confidentiality guidelines
