Job Description

PRN - 72 hours every 4 weeks

General Summary

Working with minimal supervision, this position involves assessing patients, developing, evaluating, and adjusting care plans. The role entails providing care to patients using a combination of therapeutic methods, the nursing process, technology, and collaboration with other healthcare team members, all in line with established standards. The position involves interpreting and performing complex patient care procedures within the individual's area of expertise. Team members work together as part of the Care Team and Support Team, responsible for achieving patient outcomes defined in the care plan and pathway. Patients may range from infants to older adults as stipulated in Performance Standards.

Principal Responsibilities And Tasks

The following overview outlines the primary duties and responsibilities of this role:
  • Providing care to unit-specific and/or hospital-based patient populations; working independently with a strong foundation in clinical skills and knowledge; actively engaged in advancing personal practice. The incorporation of evidence-based practices into daily care is essential.
  • Taking responsibility for patient care processes and outcomes throughout a care episode, being accountable to patients and families. Additionally, accountable to peers for promoting collective practice on the unit and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to strategize and coordinate care that addresses patient and family needs. Serving as a clinical resource whenever necessary.
  • Participating in initiatives aimed at implementing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
  • Adhering to standards and contributing to activities focused on regulatory compliance.
  • Supporting decisions made by leaders and charge nurses, functioning effectively as a primary coordinating nurse when needed.
  • Demonstrating practices aligned with unit operations to ensure the provision of safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care.
  • Following and upholding the AACN guidelines for a Healthy Work Environment, emphasizing teamwork and elements essential for a positive work environment.
  • Completing any other duties as assigned.

Patient Safety

Ensuring patient safety is a priority within job responsibilities and by actively engaging in hospital, department, or unit-led patient safety initiatives.
  • Taking necessary steps to address identified risks to patient safety.
  • Reporting adverse events and near misses to appropriate management channels.
  • Identifying potential risks in processes, procedures, equipment, and sharing these concerns with relevant personnel.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Must hold a Registered Nurse license in the State of Maryland or be eligible to practice under Compact state agreements sanctioned by the MD Board of Nursing.
  • An Associate's degree is a prerequisite with a preference for a BSN.
  • Previous experience as an RN for at least one year is mandatory.
  • Completion of American Heart Association (AHA) BLS training is compulsory upon hire.
  • Should meet all unit-specific certification requirements (such as PALS, ACLS, NRP).

  • Responsible for maintaining competencies essential for the patient care environment, focusing on personal professional growth. Possesses strong clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal skills through effective verbal and written communication.
  • Proficient in multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration.
  • Capable of learning and utilizing computer systems for managing patient information.
  • Actively engages in unit-based team-building efforts; advocates for and practices teamwork.
  • Proficient in providing patient-appropriate care, understanding the principles of growth and development across different age groups. Able to assess data reflecting patient needs specific to population and age group requirements.
  • Displays flexibility and a willingness to partake in the PRN RN Standardized Program as outlined in committed Unit Based or Hospital Based levels.
