Location & Duration: Based in La Grande, OR, with travel across the state, we have openings for 2 full-time seasonal roles starting immediately and lasting until September 20, 2024.

What you will be responsible for:

In this role, your main focus will be to support the implementation of applied research and monitoring efforts for the preservation of native inland fishes in Oregon. Your tasks will revolve around capturing and managing nonnative Brook Trout in the Upper South Fork Sprague River and recording the distribution and population of Bull Trout, Brook Trout, and other fish species in the Minam River watershed. General project tasks include:

  • Travel to remote sampling locations.
  • Trek on trails, off-trails, and in streams (up to 25 km daily) carrying sampling gear and camping essentials (up to 23 kg).
  • Locate sampling spots using maps, compasses, and GPS devices.
  • Sample up to 4 km of stream daily.
  • Capture fish using various methods such as backpack electrofishing and seine netting.
  • Anesthetize fish, including protected species, following approved guidelines.
  • Euthanize nonnative fish following approved procedures.
  • Weigh and measure fish with care.
  • Collect tissue for genetic analysis and samples for age assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of all collected data.
  • Conduct PIT tag surveys and tag fish accordingly.
  • Stay at remote field sites for a maximum of 8 days at a time.
  • Maintain field equipment in proper working condition.

The above duties provide a general overview of the work involved and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

Working Environment:

  • Will require a flexible work schedule with varying daily hours and may include work exceeding 40 hours per week (overtime eligible).
  • Operate in a two-person field crew in remote and demanding settings.
  • Travel to research sites, camping in wilderness areas for up to 8 days consecutively.
  • Carry personal and group sampling equipment using standard backpacking gear.
  • Walk on and off trails, covering up to 25 km daily.
  • Work in diverse weather conditions including cold, rain, snow, and high winds.
  • Effectively communicate with various stakeholders.
  • Work in high desert or alpine climates at altitudes up to approximately 2500 meters.

Requirements/Skills Needed:

There are no set minimum qualifications for this position; however, we seek candidates with the following experience or skills. Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • A valid driver's license and a good driving history.
  • Experience with backpack electrofishing equipment.
  • Fieldwork experience in remote settings, including wilderness areas.
  • Experience with self-supported camping for extended periods.
  • Pursuing or holding a degree in Fisheries, Wildlife Science, or related biological/ecological fields.
