The Commissioning Intern with the Systems teams works with other Bastian employees, customers and suppliers to utilize the latest technologies to integrate material handling systems for complex applications.

The Systems Team is the lead of integrating large scale Material Handling solutions often involving our Controls, Software, Robotics, and Consulting Teams within the project.

Technologies used in this position include the full scope of Material Handling with conveyors ranging from simple gravity conveyor up to cutting edge shoe sorters with servo driven diverts, robotics, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems from a variety of vendors, and complex add on such as automated carton erection or print and applies.

The Commissioning Intern is responsible for supporting automation projects and will be capable of component selection, device troubleshooting, HMI development, PLC programming and debugging, Software debugging, onsite system checkout and startup, and validation of System Throughputs and Efficiencies.


General Duties:

  • Close Coordination with team leads
  • Maintain commissioning check out list specific to each project
  • Installing, starting-up and troubleshooting equipment that is generally not manufactured by Bastian, but whose quality and operation reflects on Bastian and affects the success of the project
  • Modify and debug PLCs and HMIs per customer and Bastian specifications with a focus on throughput optimization
  • Clear communication with management, engineering, project management and other team members
  • Develop and implement standard practices to ensure quality improvement and cost reduction
  • Work well with others on the Bastian Team. Have fun
  • Solve technical problems either individually or though collaboration
  • Deliver successful automation projects with regards to customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget.
  • Communicate with other Bastian team members effectively. Check and use voice mail / e-mail diligently. Maintain the team relationship.
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable technologies or programs.
  • Communicate strategic information regarding suppliers, customers and competition.
  • Support the Systems Checklist for systems projects.
  • Identify new controls, software or hardware techniques or equipment that will help maintain Bastian as a leader in our industry.
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Track time spent by project and enter into time tracking software
  • Lead training sessions for other engineers, technicians, and project managers
  • Any and all job duties as assigned.
