Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent develops and performs habitat and wildlife population analysis, research, monitoring, and studies; writes final reports, prepares regulatory and compliance documents, and answers difficult questions from the public. The incumbent represents the Department for wildlife and habitat-related work in Plumas and Sierra Counties and may act as a lead person for one or more entry-level environmental scientists and seasonal/scientific aids. The incumbent serves as the regional lead for monitoring gray wolf ecology, response to conflict, and the primary point of public contact regarding the expanding population. The incumbent is responsible for performing habitat analysis on over 30,000 acres of CDFW owned Department lands, and for providing local expertise to support new land acquisitions in Sierra and Plumas counties. Responds to and coordinates with other agencies, institutions, and the public regarding human/wildlife conflict. Engages with local fish and game commission on environmental analysis, management, planning, public use, and regulation of public and private lands. Incumbent maintains a high level of proficiency in biology, natural resource management, and environmental regulation. Responds to wildlife depredation, collecting specimens for research and management projects.

Working Conditions

This is a remote-duty appointment stationed from a home-based office. Incumbent shall expect varied and responsive work hours, sometimes during inclement weather conditions, while safely operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, All Terrain Vehicles, and boats. The incumbent may be required to wear a uniform which identifies the incumbent as an CDFW employee. Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's license for the operation of motor vehicles in California. Valid Class C Driver's Licenses for any of the 50 States is acceptable for this application.
