  • Not required As independently licensed health professionals, CRNAs are responsible and accountable for their practice. The scope of practice includes direct patient care, administration, educational and research activities.
  • The CRNA works with diverse age groups to include adult and geriatric patients and is able to meet age-specific needs of the patient population served.
  • The CRNA is clinically accountable to the Chief, Anesthesia Service. CRNAs practice in collaboration with other health care professionals in a collegial relationship to achieve common goals for care, safety, and welfare of patients.
  • CRNAs provide anesthetic services within four general categories: 1. Pre-anesthesia preparation and evaluation 2. Anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence 3. Post-anesthesia care 4. Peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions outside the OR suite The CRNA demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary when performing his/her duties in providing care appropriate to the VA patient.
  • He/she demonstrates knowledge of age-associated changes, illnesses, and potential disabilities in order to work with adult and geriatric patients. He/she possesses the ability to communicate, assess, and/or interpret data and information reflective of the patient's status to identify the patient's requirements in providing the care needed as described in policies, procedures, and following sound practices.
