JOB DESCRIPTION:

Starting in the 24/25 school year. The Special Education Teacher will provide and/or supervise the implementation of educational experiences for elementary students with a wide variety of special needs. The successful candidate will put the educational needs of their students at the forefront of all planning, implementing, collaborating and instructing.

This teacher will provide educational programs for students special education. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to:
1. Provide appropriate assessment of students functioning in the mild/moderate/severe disability range.
2. Organize and conduct IEP meetings.
3. Prepare, organize, implement, and supervise Individualized Education Program for students in conjunction with IEP team members.
4. Write measurable goals and objectives that facilitate and measure student growth.
5. Maintain proper records and facilitate necessary paperwork and forms as required by law and district policies.
6. Communicate effectively on a regular basis with parents, school staff, students, community organizations, and work supervisors.
7. Provide effective opportunities for peer interaction with non-disabled students.
8. Maintain current IEPs and serve as an IEP case manager.
9. Be flexible to the demands of the position and manage time effectively.
10. Work with students in an enthusiastic, supportive, and consistent manner.
11. Meet the physical needs of disabled students which may include, but is not limited to toileting, feeding, changing clothing, and assisting with medical devices.
12. Maintain classroom discipline and an orderly educational program.
13. Use technology in the teaching and managing of students.
14. Work with and assume the responsibility for the productive use of classroom paraeducators.
15. Teach direct instruction methods and individualized where needed, support mainstreamed student learning by working collaboratively with general education teachers, work within IEP procedures and expectations; design and implement transition plans as needed.

16. Collaborate with transitioning team for the Birth-2 program.

17. Perform other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Hold a valid Washington State teaching certificate with required special education endorsements.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with developmentally appropriate practices, legal requirements of special education, assessment methods and best practices and strategies for working with life skills students.
  • Lead and document all guidance team meetings, along with any other necessary meetings that coincide with students' needs.
  • Direct and collaborate effectively with regular education teachers, student services staff and para-educators within and outside the special education program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, collaboratively and positively with students, parents and collegues, orally and in writing.
  • Develop, write and implement comprehensive and compliant IEP's.
  • Ability to plan and provide specially designed instruction in accordance with students; IEP goals and monitor progress with ongoing data collection.
  • Develop and implement individual behavior plans informed by funcition behavioral assessment data and observations.
  • Maintain proper records and facilitate the necessary paperwork and forms as required by law and Columbia School District policy.
  • Meet essential special education deadlines.
