Job Title
R&D Technician III

As an R&D Technician III, you will be responsible for analyzing and controlling material and processes in the development/pilot production of high quality ceramics. In addition, you will be responsible for sample preparation, test, and analysis of ceramic or other related materials.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, analyze, and report elemental results for ceramic materials:
    • Clean glassware
    • Grind samples
    • Weigh samples
    • Work with concentrated acids and bases
    • Perform microwave digestion
    • Perform fusion techniques
    • Troubleshoot, calibrate, and analyze samples on an ICP-OES
    • Demonstrate basic ability to relate spectral data to final results
    • Use basic analytical equipment: volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, laboratory beakers, balances, automatic pipettes, furnaces, fume hoods, etc.
    • Work safely with concentrated acids including but not limited to Nitric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Hydrofluoric acid.
  • Work under minimal supervision following approved work instructions in the creation and/or analysis of high quality ceramic products.
  • Act as 'go-to' person in the absence of team lead or supervisor when assistance with procedures, equipment, or information is needed.
  • Assist in analyzing data, systems, processes, product, or equipment utilizing engineering principles and report results to customers or leadership as required.
  • Work independently on assigned projects, create technical reports as required, and identify and suggest solutions.
  • Perform data gathering tasks requiring the use and application of appropriate software to accurately maintain specified records of technical data.
  • Interact with internal customers and assist in reviewing or reporting findings of the analysis of ceramics or related materials.
  • Exhibit troubleshooting skills on specific equipment in area of responsibility, clean equipment, and perform preventative maintenance as required.
  • Cross-train on equipment and process operations and comply with customer specifications as well as quality and safety standards.
  • Provide training/cross-training in equipment and process operations that complies with customer specifications as well as quality and safety standards.
  • Exhibit proficiency in operation and learning numerous operations as required, including making machine/instrument adjustments and performing equipment set-ups and maintenance.
  • Assist in the design of new systems analyses, materials, processes, products, or equipment by working on segments of developmental projects.
Job Requirements:

Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus 4 years related laboratory experience or Bachelor of Science degree with 2-4 years of related work experience.
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in a laboratory environment. Chemistry/analytical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience with ICP-OES and/or other compositional analysis techniques.
  • Experience with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in standard wet chemistry techniques and handling strong acids.
Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Intermediate math and writing skills and basic statistics knowledge required.
  • Understands general ceramic science principles for materials related to assigned projects and contributes relevant observations and is consistently able to offer solutions.
  • Able to generate basic technical reports.
  • Able to do basic data interpretation and analysis.
  • Possess the ability to use the computer system for basic departmental functions. Familiarity with and/or comfort learning instrument specific software systems.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Exhibits effective cooperation and communication skills to effectively work within a team environment.
Target Hiring Range
Hourly: USD USD 32.38
