PHARMACY INTERN

SUMMARY

To assist the pharmacist in the preparation of IV admixtures and other drugs, place wholesaler orders for stock replacement, and fulfill other duties necessary for the management of the pharmacy under the direction and supervision of the pharmacist at either the LS or GS pharmacy as needed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Requires a high school education or equivalent. A Pharmacy Technician certification is preferred.

Knowledge and ability to perform basic mathematics is required.

  1. Must be registered by the Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy intern under section 3(e) of the act (63 P. S. §390-3(e)) and §27.26 (relating to pharmacy internship)
  2. Must comply with all requirements of the practice of Pharmacy according to Chapter 27 of the State Board of Pharmacy
  3. Pharmacy students working under the direct, immediate, personal supervision of a pharmacist may perform procedures which require professional skill and training such as verifying ingredients, weighing ingredients, compounding ingredients and other similar processing of ingredients.
  4. Must understand pharmacy law pertaining to student duties requiring that a student may not enter or be in the pharmacy if a licensed pharmacist is not also present, perform any act within the practice of pharmacy that involves discretion or independent professional judgment; or perform a duty until the student has been trained and the duty has been specified in orientation or policy.
  5. Carry containers of medicine in and around the hospital.
  6. Count and fill different forms of medicine and place in a container or cart drawer for pharmacist verification prior to dispensing.
  7. Type, print, or generate labels from the computer.
  8. Maintain records which are related to the practice of pharmacy.
  9. Reconstitute and prepare IV admixtures, parenteral products and other medications for pharmacist check and verification.
  10. Count and prepare drugs for automated dispensing cabinet restock after pharmacist verification.
  11. Must be aware of the limits of pharmacy student authority and understand that only the pharmacist may accept or transcribe oral or telephoned medication orders
