Overview:

THE NEIGHBORHOOD DEFENDER SERVICE OF DETROIT (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office providing criminal and civil representation in Detroit. NDS is accepting applications for the IT Specialist Intern position.

NDS Detroit represents residents of Wayne who are charged with crimes and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Clients are represented by teams composed of lawyers, investigators, social workers, advocates, and team administrators. NDS also provides pre-arrest representation to clients under threat of arrest. NDS adheres to a client-centered approach to representation that emphasizes heightened responsiveness to clients needs before arrest, while a case is pending, and after the case concludes. NDS is committed to addressing clients' comprehensive legal and social service needs.

The IT Specialist Intern is integral to the defense team, which is committed to serving marginalized persons and communities. The IT Specialist Intern will help shape our present and future, contributing to a collaborative environment and culture of excellence in alignment with our values. At NDS Detroit, how we represent our clients is as essential as individual case outcomes.

Responsibilities:
  1. Embrace NDS philosophy of client-centered, community-based, holistic representation and commitment to excellence.
  2. Help to maintain an inventory of all equipment and software contracts as needed.
  3. Provide users with technical support for computer problems.
  4. Help ensure employees are fully trained and supported to use IT systems.
  5. Help ensure that all user services, including system availability, hardware and software needs, and technical support, are provided promptly, accurately, and efficiently.
  6. Help develop computer information resources, providing for data security and control, strategic computing, and disaster recovery.
  7. Stay abreast of advances in technology.
  8. Assist the IT Specialist in managing backup, security, and user help systems.
  9. Assist the IT Specialist in administering MS 365 for the organization, including troubleshooting, training, accounting, and maintenance.
  10. Help update the website with media and/or general updates. Consider other improvements.
  11. Assist the IT Specialist in safeguarding and ensuring the working conditions of all office machinery, including printers, copiers, postage meters, telecommunication systems, Smart Boards, and video displays.
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will bring:

  1. A demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, racial equity, and social justice issues.
  2. Experience in IT hardware and software administration, particularly as an MS 365 Administrator.
  3. Experience using MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom.
  4. Experience using WordPress and other web technologies.
  5. A high level of maturity and discretion, combined with an ability to quickly build relationships across varying identities, income levels, races, and ethnicities.
  6. Commitment to learning how to guide projects while applying good and practiced judgment, strategically and routinely pushing through roadblocks to achieve goals.
  7. A high level of organizational and administrative skills to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  8. Clear and effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Compensation: Unpaid internship or for school credit.
