Senior Credit Review Manager - Wholesale and Capital Markets

The Senior Credit Review Manager is a member of the bank's Credit Review function. Credit Review is an independent team reporting to the bank's Audit Committee and is responsible for oversight of all bank lending activities. The Senior Credit Review Manager is responsible for the independent evaluation of Commercial Banking loan transactions, credit portfolios, and credit risk management practices.

As the Senior Credit Review Manager, you will be responsible for managing portfolio reviews, in which we assess the quality of portfolios and transactions, including adherence to bank policies and procedures and regulatory guidance. Through written reports to senior management, the Senior Credit Review Manager will provide an independent assessment of the accuracy of assigned risk ratings, the quality of loan underwriting, and adherence to defined risk appetite standards. Working individually or as part of a review team, the Senior Credit Review Manager will use their expertise to identify existing or potential issues in underwriting and portfolio management and assist in formulating practical solutions to help reduce risk to the bank. This high-profile role provides an opportunity for extensive interactions with the bank's senior management team.

Primary responsibilities include
  • Lead or participate in independent, qualitative, and quantitative assessments of portfolios and transactions, including evaluations of the structure of facilities to multiple borrower types encompassing a wide range of products provided to commercial counterparties.
  • Assess the risk management and credit stewardship of individual counterparties and portfolios, including compliance with relevant credit policies as part of the Citizens policy framework.
  • Interact with credit and business executives and staff to collect and interpret findings, providing verbal feedback and written reporting with conclusions on the adequacy of all aspects of loan underwriting and monitoring.
  • Escalate issues, including the handling of sensitive or difficult messages and less than satisfactory ratings.
  • Identify risk issues and formulate practical recommendations to (i) remediate or rectify deficiencies, (ii) improve business and risk processes, (iii) amend counterparty and macro risk appetite statements, and (iv) enhance policies, procedures, and credit risk reporting.
  • Represent Credit Review in meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies.
  • Assist the Business Unit Director with annual and quarterly planning, reporting, and budgeting.
  • Assess loan structure and the quality and accuracy of underwriting, identify key risks, and provide an overall evaluation of the credit decision.
  • Ensure accuracy of borrower risk ratings using internal risk rating models and regulatory risk rating criteria.
  • Assess compliance of loan transactions against bank credit policies, standards, and risk appetite parameters.
  • Identify potential weaknesses and emerging trends at transaction and portfolio levels.
  • Use communication and influencing skills to resolve issues and evaluate solutions for inclusion in examination reports.
  • Summarize findings and recommendations in concise, written reports distributed to executive management and regulatory agencies.
  • Define, lead, and manage strategic initiatives, including Targeted Reviews and special projects as needed in support of Credit Review's objectives.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with bank stakeholders and foster a positive work environment consistent with Citizens' values and CREDO.
Qualifications, Education, Certifications and/or Other Professional Credentials
  • 10+ years of credit risk experience in one of these areas: credit review, loan structuring and underwriting, or loan workout, with experience in middle market and large corporate commercial lending.
  • Solid understanding of US regulatory rating framework and US regulatory requirements for credit risk management, including origination, underwriting, and portfolio management.
  • Knowledge of middle market and large corporate lending including sponsor-lead leveraged loans, derivatives, and syndicated facilities.
  • Experience with reviewing, underwriting, or approving credits in a wide range of sectors such as oil and gas, high technology, media, asset-backed finance, and healthcare; knowledge of correspondent bank analysis is a plus but not required.
  • Experience and knowledge of risk rating models and regulatory risk rating definitions.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with an ability to synthesize complex messages for an executive audience.
  • Experience interacting with supervisory agencies, external auditors, and senior executives.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to defend an independent position in a constructive manner.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment, lead project teams, and prioritize workload to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work independently in a geographically-dispersed environment.
  • BA or BS degree required; MBA or other advanced degree or certification is a plus.
Hours & Work Schedule
  • Hours per Week: 40
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
