OVERVIEW:

Provides information to diagnose patient illnesses by operating magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce results

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate magnetic resonance imaging equipment to products images of the body for diagnostic purposes.
  • Reviews patient history and physician's orders. Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
  • When ordered, prepares and administers contrast media and/or medications within scope of practice. Monitors patient condition continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate.
  • Monitor video display of area being scanned and adjust density or contact to improve picture quality.
  • Use safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patient and staff.
  • Review and evaluate computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
  • Assess images on screen or film to ensure quality for physician interpretation, perform periodic maintenance check on equipment as required.
  • Observe screen during scan to ensure that image produced is satisfactory for diagnostic purposes, making adjustments to equipment as required.
  • Observes and cares for patients throughout examinations to ensure their safety and comfort.
  • Decide which images to include, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas.
  • Maintains MRI/radiology supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.
  • Prepares patient for MRI procedure by positioning patient; adjusting immobilization devices; moving equipment into specified position; adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Minimizes risks to patient and staff by practicing MRI protection techniques, assessing clinical environment, patient shielding, and knowledge of exposure/risk factors.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media, administering first aid, and use of emergency medication/supplies.
  • Maintains production and quality of MRIs by following established standards and procedures; developing radiographs; observing radiographic results; making necessary adjustments.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient EMR and department records.
  • Obtains consents as necessary.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:
  • Graduate of an accredited Imaging program
  • Requires 1-2 years of MRI experience. Working knowledge of applicable MR scan technology is required.
  • ARRT (MR) or ARMRIT (MR) Required.
  • State licensure requirement for the state in which they practice
  • CPR certification is required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT); Registered as a Technologist registered in magnetic resonance imaging (MR)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The ability to take x-rays and other radiological tests while comforting patients and addressing their anxieties. The skill to assess if a patient is receiving too much radiation. This is very important for patient safety. The ability to keep all patient information confidential. Use of computer and software to look up patient information and files.
