Job Description and Duties

LIFEGUARD II (SEASONAL) – BAY AREA DISTRICT / SAN FRANCISCO BAY SECTOR

This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger or Lifeguard). The reporting location is Angel Island State Park. Primary responsibilities include performing first aid and CPR as needed, detecting and rescuing persons or vessels in distress, educating visitors about rules and regulations, providing daily leadership for the Lifeguard I (Seasonal) staff and working as a deckhand on State Park vessels, with an emphasis on assisting peace officers with a wide variety of medical emergencies.

This position works as a crew member on State Park vessels as a deckhand. Pre-employment and random drug testing is a U.S. Coast Guard requirement. Time worked as a deckhand can count toward boat operator licensure. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience toward a career as a licensed boat operator, and offers the opportunity to build a base of knowledge for becoming a rescue boat operator at another unit in the future. Training opportunities to improve knowledge, skills and abilities may be offered.

This is a uniformed position, and the employee must abide by all applicable departmental uniform and grooming standards. Hiring process requires fingerprinting, substance abuse screening and a background check. Must be willing to weekends and holidays. This position may be up to full-time from May through September and part-time other times of the year.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver's license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver's license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver's license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Working Conditions

Willingness to work as a Deckhand on State Park vessels. Required to enroll in the U.S. Coast Guard drug testing program, which includes a pre-employment drug screening and random drug testing. This is required of all Angel Island State Park employees.

Must possess the following:

Willingness to work long and irregular hours, weekends, and holidays; tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards. Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Must demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge of: First-aid procedures and resuscitation methods, surf, ocean, lake, and river swimming, bathing, and boating hazards; first-aid and rescue equipment, and their proper use and maintenance; advanced first-aid practices and resuscitation methods.

Ability to: Swim at a level sufficient to perform lifesaving activities; read and write English at a level appropriate to the class; learn and apply standard first-aid procedures and resuscitation methods; follow directions; remain alert; analyze situations accurately; think and act quickly and take command in emergencies; establish and maintain good working relations; communicate effectively; lead and train seasonal staff; and plan work schedules and assignments.

You will have the opportunity to deckhand and operate multiple vessels in the San Francisco Bay, giving you valuable hours toward becoming a licensed boat operator. The experience you gain on the boats here will add to your qualifications for future careers such as rescue boat operator (Surfwatch), firefighter/fire boat operator, boat are many opportunities for boat operators throughout the world. The experience you gain responding to bicycle accidents and trail rescues will expand your emergency medical skills as you interact directly with paramedics responding via fire boat from nearby Tiburon. Opportunities exist to attend the Department's own EMT course as a paid employee and join the Bay Area District's Emergency Medical Services Instructor team as a Public Safety First Aid Instructor, further expanding your opportunities within the Department. Angel Island State Park is starting a new Junior Lifeguard Program, so you will have an opportunity to instruct children in the Bay Area who have never been exposed to State Parks or Junior Lifeguards. Special Requirements

The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Possession of (1) a Department of Parks and Recreation First Responder certificate or equivalent and (2) a Department of Parks and Recreation Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Red Cross Professional Rescuer or equivalent certificate. An approved Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certificate or equivalent certificate may be substituted for both the required certificates. Applicants who do not possess these certificates will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of the
certificates before they can be considered for an appointment. Must have the equivalent to three months of experience performing the duties of a lifeguard in other than swimming pools.
