Phlebotomists

Qualification Requirments:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:
High school graduate, some college preferred. Must complete laboratory training courses for phlebotomists or complete approved training course. Certification by a nationally recognized agency is desirable.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedures manuals. Ability to speak effectively to customers and/or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential funtions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time; stoop; walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently has to use a computer keyboard. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth preception, and the ability to adust focus.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to corrosive chemicals, infectious agents, handling glassware, needles and handling unpleasant specimens such as stool and urine. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation. Tasks that are routinely performed that may involve possible contact with blood and other body fluids: clean up of contaminated area, handling waste, specimen accessioning, specimen collection, specimen handling/transport, specimen shipping, venipuncture, skin puncture, and making blood smears.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Exercise concern for patient's welfare is paramount.
  2. Collects blood specimens from hospital inpatients and outpatients.
  3. Collects other types of specimens from patients.
  4. Maintains inventory of supplies.
  5. Other tasks and responsibilities as directed.
