Summary:

  • Under the direction of the site administrator, or designee, this position supports student achievement by assisting in maintaining standards of behavior and discipline among students at District schools in order to help teachers stay focused on classroom instruction; providing a liaison among individual youths, school authorities, parents, and community organizations in order to clarify problems, improve schoolcommunity relations, and promote safe students practices both in and out of the classroom

Representative Duties:

  • Serve as a campus resource to students, staff and parents in identifying particular problems and finding solutions to resolve conflicts/distractions that interfere with instruction and learning.
  • Advise youth on positive ways to manage conflict and model positive alternative strategies for interaction with each other and school personnel.
  • Intervene to prevent confrontations and unsafe activities between and among students in order to prevent lost instructional time.
  • Support the educational program by providing information pertaining to potential disruptions and unsafe activities on or near District campuses.
  • Attend and participate in, as needed, relevant schoolwide meetings and events.
  • Encourage students to develop and maintain regular school attendance, observe school grooming and dress guidelines, dedication to good study habits and respect for fellow students and faculty.
  • Work both in individual and small group settings with atrisk and intentional nonlearners to discuss issues that are affecting academic achievement and that are counterproductive to achieving positive educational outcomes.
  • Comply with confidentiality, licensing, and legal requirements, as well as the District's code of ethics.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of high school, preferably supplemented with college
  • level courses in sociology, child and adolescent growth
    /development, ethnic studies and group dynamics
    , or related field.

Experience:
License and Certification
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license prior to the completion of the probationary period.
Ability to be covered under the District property/liability insurance.

Work Schedule
This position typically works part-time, five hours and forty-five minutes per day, and observes the student calendar.

Salary
The initial hiring rate is at the first step ($21.83/hour) of the appropriate five-step salary schedule for the position. The probationary period is 130-work days in paid status.

Upon completing the probationary period for permanent status, a one-step salary advance will be granted and shall establish an anniversary date upon which all future advances on the salary range shall be based.


Examination

Work Environment

Work is performed mostly indoors, utilizing standard modern office equipment and special education assistive devices, in classrooms, offices, restrooms, etc.

Indoor environment is temperature-controlled with heating and air conditioning.

Work may also be performed outdoors such as walking between locations at sites, walking to and from the car for required off-site assignments and attending field trips, playground duty, bus duty, community-based instruction outings, PE etc.

Exposure to school traffic, public contact (i.e. students, parents, site personnel), and classroom/office noise.

Physical Abilities:

Frequent sitting, some standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting at waist; fine dexterity and manipulation (i.e. handwriting, using manipulatives, iPad, tying shoes, etc.); some keyboarding/typing; operating standard office equipment; potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
