JOB SUMMARY

Established on June 20, 2022, the Montebello Fire Department has protected the lives and property of the residents and visitors of the City of Montebello for over 100 years now. The Department is driven by its foundational core values of professionalism, integrity, compassion, service, honesty stewardship, and courteousness guide our commitment, as we remain community-focus, and value driven. Over the years the Montebello Fire Department has expanded its scope of public safety significantly since its inception, creating a "culture of innovation" and best-practices.

The Department continues to operate three (3) fire stations and has three (3) ALS Engines and one (1) ALS/BLS Ladder Truck, serving a community with a population of 61,200 spread out over 8.33 square miles. The Department is an All-Risk agency providing structural and wildland fire suppression, advanced life support (paramedic) emergency medical care, vehicle and equipment extrication rescue, and hazardous materials response at a First Responder Operations level. The Department also provides non-emergency response, public education, and community outreach services to the community, in addition to field-based services to specialized populations with complex needs. In 2022, the Department responded to 9,432 response calls for service. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responses accounted for approximately 76% of calls, with Fire Suppression resulting in approximately 24% of the emergency calls.

The Montebello Fire Department Auxiliary Firefighter Program provides Fire Academy Graduates a great opportunity to apply their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) skills, gain understanding of the fire service career, gain experience and insight to the expectations of what is required to be a successful firefighter, including developing an understanding of behavioral health conditions, and provide additional training to encourage graduates to continue developing their professional growth towards obtaining a Paramedic License. Auxiliary Firefighters will participate responding to emergencies, inspections, and maintain apparatus, equipment, and stations. Participate in drills, training, and public education. In addition, will have opportunity to participate in other Fire Department Programs and Services, such as assist with Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction services, function as the EMT provider with the Montebello Community Assistance Program (MCAP) and any other fire service assignments. The Auxiliary Firefighter is required to work a minimum of one 24-hour shift per week and 8 hours a month with MCAP. The Auxiliary Firefighter offers a great opportunity to learn and experience the position of a full-time firefighter while still offering flexible hours. Program Structure:

Participants in this internship program will be expected to commit to volunteer (unpaid) for at least one year of service. The schedule for this program is one 24-hour shift per week and 8 hours with MCAP at least once a month (flexible schedule).

Under general supervision, performs a variety of firefighter duties; performs fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous material incident response, emergency rescue and medical assistance duties to protect life and property; and performs related duties as assigned.

Under general supervision, the Auxiliary Firefighter responds to fire alarms and other related requests for emergency assistance; participates in fire prevention inspections, training activities, public relations program, station, and equipment maintenance; performs other related work as required.

Training/Experience:

Graduation from an accredited Fire Academy.

Licenses/ Certificates/ and Special Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age or older

Possession of a valid California EMT-Basic or California EMT-Paramedic and CPR

Possession of a CPAT or Biddle within 12 months

Possession of a State certified Fire Academy

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:

Knowledge of:

Basic knowledge of methods and principles of fire suppression, fire investigation, fire prevention, emergency medical response and hazard material control.

Ability to:Understand and act in accordance with the Department policy, rules and regulations; learn a variety of firefighting, emergency service and rescue methods, duties and techniques; respond quickly to emergency situations and work under pressure; assist with fire inspection and prevention activities; interpret, explain and apply fire codes and regulations; learn and perform special assignments as delegated; understand and carry out oral and written directions; meet established standards of physical endurance and agility; effectively represent the fire service functions of the Department with the public; communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Education:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
