POSITION SUMMARY

Atlanta Public Schools acknowledges, honors, and values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and cultural differences. The Coordinator (Equity) is responsible for providing thought leadership in diversity, inclusion, and equity, with a focus on recruiting, retention, performance, advancement, and equitable practices within the school district. The role involves championing and promoting efforts to create a diverse and inclusive culture and environment for all students and staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in human resources, business, education, public relations, or related field of study required.
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in human resources, education, public administration, business, organizational development, or related field of study preferred.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Teaching Certification preferred
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred
WORK EXPEREINCE:
  • 5 years of work experience in human resources, talent management, or a similar diversity-based leadership role.
  • Experience recruiting teachers, developing teachers, or working in an education management/policy/advocacy role desired.
  • Proven track record of cross-functional partnerships and experience building diversity strategies and succession planning.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Passion and commitment to improving organizational outcomes and enhancing employee and student experience through diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.
  • Knowledge of critical issues in education, human resources, and an understanding of educator effectiveness and performance data.
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning best practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of Human Resources (HR) best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1991 Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act,
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other applicable laws.
  • Ability to develop and maintain creative and innovative programs and services.
  • Strong organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work within a matrixed organization with multiple reporting lines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in both written and verbal presentation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) related to staff, drawing from research on best practices, building on current organizational efforts, and working with various stakeholders.
  • Assists district leaders and schools in the critically examining of school and institutional practices that inhibit access, inclusion, or belonging, leading to educational inequity and gaps in student achievement.
  • Supports the District's strategic planning by grounding decision-making equity and outcome data setting goals and selecting appropriate measures to monitor the progress of equity-focused initiatives.
  • Collaborates with management to create, implement, and monitor programs designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment of students and staff.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors policies, programs, and practices that support the district's diversity initiatives.
  • Conducts root cause analyses of trends and phenomena to identify areas of strength for scale and barriers to access, engagement, and opportunity for all stakeholders.
  • Assists with organizing and managing data and evidence to develop annual reports evaluating the effectiveness of district efforts and programming.
  • Collaborates district-wide to review and evaluate the effectiveness of DEI initiatives.
  • Collaborates with experts to evaluate APS' practices, stays current on culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy research and best practices in education, and recommends relevant adaption of APS practices and actions following that learning.
  • Designs equity-focused orientation for new staff and facilitated training for existing staff.
  • Creates and delivers effective professional learning for district and school-based staff on topics such as creating culturally and linguistically responsive cultures and climates, supporting diverse students and families, creating academic achievement for diverse student populations, etc.
  • Creates and implements a community outreach strategy focused on developing a partner organization network that supports diverse families and communities.
  • Provides guidelines for affinity groups and supports employee networks that assist under-represented staff populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Veterans, and people with disabilities.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed.

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 15 or more pounds on a frequent basis.

Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.

Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.
