Job Description

1 PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Level II Psychologist in Neuropsychology and Psychological Evaluation Services - Provide neuropsychology and psychological services within behavioral health services and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in planning and providing care in various modalities under general supervision; provide clinical supervision to mental health trainees.

Neuropsychology Services range from inpatient consults for medical and psychiatric units for disposition/discharge and treatment planning to outpatient evaluations from medical and behavioral health ambulatory clinics throughout adulthood (age 18+) for differential diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with neurologic, medical, neurodevelopmental, and psychiatric conditions presenting with cognitive difficulties. The population served includes adults with cognitive (e.g); attention, memory, language) complaints in the context of CVA, TBI, cancer, epilepsy/seizure disorder, autoimmune disorder, movement disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, chronic pain, schizophrenia, and other medical and psychiatric illness.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide direct neuropsychological and psychological evaluations and services under the supervision of a licensed psychologist/psychiatrist in various modalities, including, individual psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychological testing/assessment Prepare comprehensive, integrated testing reports with appropriate treatment plans and recommendations for patients and maintain timely and suitable records and files, and test results. Provide feedback to patient and families Serve as an active member of an interdisciplinary treatment team and consult with other disciplines regarding diagnoses, prognoses, interventions, and recommendations for the disposition of individual cases. Provide consultation to medical students and psychiatry residents and other disciplines as needed regrading psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment, behavior management, and treatment planning. Provide clinical supervision to mental health trainees (medical residents, psychology interns/externs) Participate and contribute to research projects and program development Organize lead and/or supervise cognitive remediation group therapy Provide didactic training and other educational and training opportunities to mental health trainees Participate in departmental meetings and grand rounds including neurology, psychiatry, and medicine provided through SUNY Downstate.

Minimum Qualifications

SPECIAL NOTE # = Additional Requirements for Assignment Level II (Effective September 25, 1998)
A. A Doctoral Degree in clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology, awarded upon completion of a Doctoral Program in Psychology registered by the New York State Department of Education and designated as licensure qualifying; and
B. One additional year of satisfactory full-time experience, either as a Psychologist for the City of New York, or in a supervisory capacity in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology in an approved agency or institution. Employees who complete their Doctoral Degree requirements on or after October 1, 1992 must have at least one year of qualifying experience gained after the completion of all Doctoral Degree requirements; and

* Effective September 25, 1998, appointments to Assignment Level II require 1) a Ph.D. as outlined in A above; and 2) one year of qualifying experience as outlined in B above.
C. License Requirements for Assignment Level II
1. In the New York City Departments of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and
Alcoholism Services, Police and Fire, and those programs functionally transferred to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation from the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education.
2. In agencies not noted in C. (1.) above, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of assignment. At the discretion of the appointing agency, the period to obtain the license may be extended for up to six months for employees who fail to obtain the license within one year of their assignment. Once obtained, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
