Zurich is looking for a Market Facing Underwriter, Middle Market (Mid-Senior - Senior) in Chicago, IIllinois.

Middle Markets is a significant business segment at Zurich, where we aim to attract top customer advocates with a sales-oriented mindset, strong technical underwriting skills, and solution-focused problem-solving abilities.

Our industry focus includes General Industries, Manufacturing, and Real Estate among others. Zurich Middle Markets provides comprehensive solutions for customers, including international programs.

This position will be filled at either the Middle Markets Underwriter Level II or Level III. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based on the selected applicant's experience and skill set in relation to the qualifications listed.

As a Middle Markets Underwriter (Level II or Level III), you will handle complex new and renewal Middle Markets business.

Being a part of Zurich's Underwriting Team, you will have the chance to fully leverage and refine your underwriting and marketing skills while establishing relationships with Select Brokers in the Midwestern Region.

The Middle Markets Underwriter role involves:

  • Serving as a customer industry advocate, prioritizing enhancing the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering optimal end-to-end solutions for their insurance needs.
  • Utilizing a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
  • Using risk insights, data, and models to make informed decisions at the point of sale.
  • Identifying gaps and aligning Zurich's products and value proposition to provide customers with the contract certainty they require.
  • Displaying strong analytical skills and acting as an innovative advisor.
  • Underwriting, analyzing, and generating new and renewal business.
  • Engaging in market-facing activities and production within the expanding Middle Markets division.
  • Administering and monitoring underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manual rules.
  • Establishing and maintaining agency and broker relationships.
  • Operating within broad limits and authorizations on highly complex assignments.

Basic Qualifications for Level II:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, with 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, with 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree, plus 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree, paired with 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.

AND

  • Knowledge of lines of business, legal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Familiarity with time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

Basic Qualifications for Level III:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, with 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, with 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree, with 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree, plus 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.

AND

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working within time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Teamwork experience.

Preferred Qualifications for Level II & Level III:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Market facing, Property & Casualty underwriting experience with 3 or more years of Underwriting experience in Middle Market or larger.
  • Effective risk assessment abilities.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating.
  • Familiarity with time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflecting progression in roles of increasing responsibility.
  • CPCU and ARM qualifications are advantageous.
