The System Engineer's role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all IT infrastructure systems - networks, servers, storage. The System Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues to maximize the benefit of IT systems for the business. This role also includes directing vendor partners to manage systems appropriately.

ESSENTIAL AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate to ensure smooth and reliable operation of systems to business objectives and processes.
  • Work with team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.
Acquisition & Deployment
  • Design and deploy new servers, networking, and storage to support new or upgraded applications, software, and operating systems.
  • Conduct research on system products to make recommendations and to support justification for purchasing.
  • Interact and partner with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to obtain system-related products and services.
  • Perform cost-benefit analyses for proposed changes and systems to aid management in making implementation decisions.
Operational Management
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform server maintenance and upgrades.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and administration of servers, server templates, monitoring, and security practices.
  • Provide oversight and direction for managed service providers.
  • Collaborate with helpdesk, operations and support, and business systems analysts to assist in resolving problems with software products or company software systems.
  • Assist with evaluating and transitioning existing on-premises systems for migration to the Cloud.
  • Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
  • Create system design models, specifications, and diagrams to provide reference for IT engineers and development teams.
  • Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Ensure system connectivity and operation of all servers, network and storage infrastructure, and business applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, processes, and service records.
  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
  • Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, as needed, for modified or new systems.
  • Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports when necessary.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users of systems, as necessary.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Proven experience in overseeing the design, development, and implementation of Windows Servers and related infrastructure products, both on-premises and cloud provider.
  • Proven experience with systems planning, security principles, and general software management best practices.
  • Excellent systems troubleshooting experience.
  • Working technical knowledge of cloud infrastructure and servers.
  • Working knowledge of on-premises networking and systems.
  • Competence with testing and troubleshooting business systems and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.

Minimum Experience, Education, and Technical Skills:

Formal Education:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or 5+ years equivalent related IT experience.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • 5+ years' experience working with enterprise infrastructure hardware, servers, storage, and networking.
  • 3+ years' experience with Azure networking and compute, preferred.
  • Experience with managing MS Windows servers.
  • Experience with building, patching, and managing servers both on premise and in Azure.
  • Hands-on virtual server build experience. VMWare and Azure preferred.
  • Experience in developing and implementing cloud solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience supporting enterprise level business applications.
  • Experience with networking and networking concepts is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of data security practices and requirements.
  • Experience with Agile project methodology. Azure Dev Ops (ADO) preferred.
Work/Environment and Physical Requirements (with or without an accommodation)
  • This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time, and to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • On-call availability for one week every other month.
  • Office type environment, using computer, telephone, other office equipment as needed to perform duties.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer components.
  • Occasional inspection of cables or equipment on floors and ceilings.
  • Occasional lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.
Travel Requirements
  • Position is primarily remote, with the occasional need to come to the office (Bloomington, MN) or the Data Center (Eden Prairie, MN).
  • Position may require some limited travel (locally and throughout United States); Less than 5% annually.
