Communications Specialist/Dispatcher

For the City of Hudson Police Department

Distinguishing Features of the Class:


Operates radios, telephones, and teletype equipment at the Hudson City Police headquarters for the purpose of receiving and relaying police, fire and ambulance calls, as well as other calls dealing with issues of public safety, concern, information and official City business.

This position involves responsibility for manning the complaint desk, police and fire consoles during an assigned shift.

Employees of this class must be able to function calmly and efficiently in emergencies and must be able to take appropriate action without unnecessary delay or inappropriate error.

Additional duties often consist of routine clerical assignments.

All work is performed under the general supervision of a higher ranking member of the department in accordance with established department policy.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides information and received complaints by telephone and in person as people enter the police station at the information window in the command center of the Police Station.
  • Operates all radio equipment to dispatch police officers, fire equipment and other emergency personnel.
  • Maintains continuous status and location records of police vehicles and police department personnel as well as status records of other official vehicles and personnel when required.
  • Prepares daily records and maintains department blotter record of department activities.
  • Records and files complaints and accident reports.
  • Receives bail monies.
  • Compiles information for police department reports and updates location files as well as other reports.
  • Operates teletype to secure and transmit information.
  • Constantly monitors police, fire, ambulance, and emergency services radio frequencies.
  • Monitors closed circuit television systems to maintain building security, observe prisoners, in holding cells and their physical conditions during detention.
  • Maintains log of prisoners while being held in department custody.
  • Obtains information for police officers on patrol and other department bureaus from department files and teletype inquires.
  • Monitors fire and burglar alarms and dispatches necessary and appropriate personnel and equipment and maintains required alarm records.
  • Contacts by radio and phone, persons of various City departments as needed in emergencies.
  • Operates photocopy, fax, microfilm, computer and other basic office equipment within the department as needed and required.
  • Operates computer systems for law enforcement records management.
  • Operates Emergency (E911) communications systems
  • Performs related office work as required.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Chief of Police.

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the operation of radio and telephone equipment; good knowledge of the geography of the city, ability to perform calmly and efficiently in an emergency and under stressful conditions; ability to procure and maintain accurate records and prepare reports; ability to understand and follow oral as well as written instructions; ability to write legibly, possess clerical aptitude, be computer literate, have good judgment, good hearing and clear diction, have good reading comprehension, writing, and public communications skills; ability to be courteous at all times regardless of the situation or circumstances; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

Special Requirement:
Successful psychological testing prior to employment.
