The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is a large teaching and research unit within the College of Biological Sciences.

The department is comprised of 20 faculty members in addition to emeriti faculty, lecturers, specialists, researchers, visiting faculty, postdoctoral scholars, undergraduate and graduate students, and instructional, administrative, and research staff.


The incumbent of this position works under general supervision, providing advice and guidance to the Principal Investigator (PI), and works closely with the Office of Research and Contracts & Grants Accounting to facilitate the timely submission of proposals to expedite the transfer of awards.

Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the incumbent of this position provides analytical support in contract and grant administration, budget development and comprehensive financial analysis with a mix of pre
- and post
- award activities associated with federal, state, private, and other agencies while ensuring compliance with University and governmental rules, regulations, and policies.


Independently work with Principal Investigators to understand new proposals and funding mechanisms, provide financial analysis and forecasting, analyze programmatic needs, and make recommendations.

Performs budget preparation, review, analysis, effort reporting, compliance, and forecasting of extramural budgets.


Acts as liaison with several central offices in the administration of contracts and grants, serve as one of the project managers and compliance officers to provide guidance and advice on policies and procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Handle competing demands with frequent interruptions. Work occasional overtime to meet operational needs and meet deadlines. Restricted vacation during peak times such as merit and promotions cycles, heavy recruitment periods.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience using automated financial and payroll/personnel systems, demonstrated experience with Excel spreadsheets and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Analytical and organizational skills to assume responsibility for coordination and completion of sponsored and non-sponsored projects requiring interactions with internal parties in a large organizational structure, and to compile and interpret financial data and reports.
  • Strong math skills including the ability to analyze budgets in relation to shifting expenses for adjustments and ability to project costs.
  • Organizational skills to manage significant volume of transactions in a fastpaced environment with overlapping deadlines, short lead times and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals to convey information, clarify situations, resolve problems, and negotiate services and/or agreements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the essential job duties.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Familiarity with regulations governing grant budgeting, financial reporting, cost-sharing standards, cost allocation, and policies regarding use of grant funds, preferably in a higher education environment.
