Vision Point Systems is looking for a professional in metallurgy with over 5 years of experience carrying out metallurgical studies in a laboratory setting.

This role will mainly support the Physical Metallurgy section at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, focusing on analyzing Naval structural alloy systems like high-strength steel, aluminum, nickel aluminum bronze, and titanium alloys.

Highly qualified candidates should be able to showcase a solid grasp of physical metallurgy, traditional alloy processing methods, mechanical properties, and failure analyses. Key responsibilities of this position are connected to activities related to metallurgical investigations, including:

  • Understanding of metallurgical processes applied to structural metal alloy systems.
  • Preparation of metallographic samples, encompassing cutting, mounting, grinding, etching, and examining grain structures, precipitates, or other relevant features under light-optical microscopy.
  • Conducting heat treatment studies on lab-scale samples.
  • Performing failure analyses on naval structural components made of different alloys and under diverse processing conditions.
  • Operating testing equipment for metallurgical examinations, such as hardness, dilatometry, and calorimetry.
  • Utilizing an SEM and related detectors for microstructural investigations utilizing EDS, WDS, and EBSD.
  • Analyzing data, modeling, and visualizing results using R, Python, or other similar software.
  • Recording outcomes in technical reports, memos, or briefs.
  • Capability to guide and supervise junior metallurgists and interns.

Requirements for the role include:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a metallurgical laboratory setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in metallurgy, materials science/engineering, or related field.
  • Ability to acquire and uphold a Secret security clearance.
  • US Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in effective written and verbal communication.


Desired skills:

A master's degree specializing in metallurgy of a relevant alloy system.
