Duties:
Nurse Practitioner (NP) will be fully qualified and certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role and in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Central Virginia VA Health Care System.
This individual is delegated the authority and responsibility to assume clinical, consultative, educational, research, and administrative duties and assignments related to the care of surgical patients for any of the subspecialty surgical sections to include; General Surgery, Vascular, Thoracic, Urology, Orthopedics, Plastics Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Interventional Radiology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, and Anesthesia.
Major Duties include but not limited to:
- Obtaining medical histories & providing physical examination
- Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, xray, and electrocardiograms.
- Request specialty care through consultation.
- Admitting and discharging patients in consultation with, and on behalf of the collaborating physician
- Developing a treatment plan, providing, and coordinating medical care for assigned patients in any care setting, including establishing diagnosis, and providing followup care.
- Documentation in the medical record as required by medical center policies and procedures.
- Evaluating outpatients to determine the needs for further health care.
- Obtaining and documenting informed consents for treatments and procedures

Preferred Experience:
- Possess one (1) to three (3) years of successful clinical experience in procedural or critical care.
- Possess Surgical Specialty experience, orthopedics preferred but not required.

English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Nurse I Level III
- Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II
- Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 12 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III
- Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 23 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 23 year's of nursing practice/experience.
- Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
