Position: Solid Waste Equipment Operator II

Under general direction from the Solid Waste Supervisor, this role includes operating various solid waste trucks and machinery for the collection, transportation, and disposal of residential, commercial, and bulk waste, as well as recyclables. The role includes logging completed work orders into a computer system and providing coverage when the supervisor is not available. Weekend and holiday work may be required as per schedule. This is an FLSA non-exempt position and is considered a driving position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Expertly and safely operate various types of solid waste collection trucks and equipment such as Front Loaders, Automated Side Loaders, Roll Offs, Rear Loaders, Hook Lifts, Front End Tractors, and pickups. Separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable trash, ensuring proper disposal following established procedures.
  • Communicate verbally with customers about their collection needs, general information, or problems related to the services provided. Inform the supervisor daily about the status of all work order requests.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment before and after use, including checking for damage, fluid levels, leaks, and the correct operation of safety equipment and lights. Review vehicle and equipment inspection forms, schedule necessary repairs with Fleet, and promptly notify the supervisor of any issues.
  • Review and provide input to the supervisor on route changes to enhance efficiency and customer service. Assist with the training of new and existing staff on the safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Repair and paint refuse and recycling containers. Replace damaged commercial and residential containers and deliver containers to customers.
  • Support community events and activities by delivering, setting up, and removing solid waste containers as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to safe working practices and rules.
  • Occasionally act as Supervisor when the permanent Supervisor is unavailable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Solid Waste Supervisor and/or Manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the history, culture, laws, and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of commercial and residential locations within the community.
  • Proficiency in operating solid waste collection vehicles and equipment.
  • Familiarity with Federal, State, and Community codes and regulations pertinent to refuse collection.
  • Ability to efficiently schedule and prioritize crew assignments for trash pickup and disposal.
  • Capable of training sanitation drivers in residential and commercial trash collection, disposal, and recycling procedures.
  • Proficiency in understanding and following written and verbal instructions.
  • Skills in the operation and basic daily maintenance of solid waste collection vehicles and equipment.
  • Problem-solving skills related to solid waste management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with community members, department heads, work crews, and local officials.
  • Ability to interpret complex laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Proficient in using personal computers and related software for updating work orders and compiling reports.
  • Effective communication skills with employees, community members, and other customers.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend.
  • Physical ability to move heavy objects weighing 20-50 pounds over long distances.
  • Capacity to work under various weather conditions, including extreme weather.
  • Ability to drive for up to 10 hours a day.

Education & Experience: A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required, along with two years of full-time work experience as a sanitation driver or in a related area. Familiarity with procedures and equipment for residential and commercial trash and recyclables collection is essential. A State of Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at the time of hire and must be maintained. This license is necessary for operating solid waste refuse vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 pounds, as well as various heavy equipment.

Equivalency: Any combination of education and/or experience that ensures satisfactory performance of job duties will be considered.
