Position Summary:

  • Provides clinical consultation to Medical Social Workers to support behavioral health and psychosocial assessments of patients with mental and behavioral health needs in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Clinically supports Medical Social Workers as they develop safety plans that empower the patients/families to utilize external resources necessary to ensure mental health support and medical care to achieve optimal psychosocial functioning.
  • Accountable for the planning and implementation of orientation and clinical education for staff in collaboration with social work leadership to ensure appropriate awareness of mental health care for children and families.
  • Responsible for collaborating with social work peers, medical care team, the mental and behavioral health team, and social work leadership to develop and implement standards of practice and projects to educate staff and support the mission and vision.
  • Assures high quality learning experiences for Medical Social Workers through ongoing assessment of needs for Medical Social Work education and training, as well as organization and implementation of training opportunities.
  • Provides behavioral health services to patients and families who have acute chronic mental and behavioral health needs within their respective care setting.
  • Provides direct/general social work intervention and support as part of the larger medical social work team within the scope of the APSW Medical Social Worker, as needed.
  • May provide limited therapeutic intervention as needed. Facilitates multidisciplinary care conferences.

Position Requirements:

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) and Wisconsin Advanced Practice Social Work (APSW) certification/licensure required.
  • Minimum of one year of social work or related field experience. Hospital experience preferred.
  • Crisis intervention and basic counseling skills.
  • Experience with the social, psychological and economic issues of children/families with severe, acute or chronic illness/disability preferred.
  • Knowledge of structure of the child welfare system, guardianship process and community pediatric resources preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function independently, prioritize and manage time
