About the job of a Police Officer at Addison Police Department

Essential Functions

  • Enforcing state and federal laws, and City regulations to maintain peace, solve problems, and deliver high-quality police services.
  • Patrolling the City, identifying suspicious activities, stopping vehicles based on reasonable cause, and engaging with individuals of interest.
  • Responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, investigating and resolving citizen complaints and criminal incidents, and ensuring public safety.
  • Assisting citizens, enforcing traffic regulations, apprehending violators, and preserving public safety.
  • Investigating crimes and accidents, collecting evidence, making arrests, and processing suspects and victims.
  • Providing community-oriented police services, collaborating with the community to address safety and crime issues, and ensuring respectful treatment of citizens.
  • Mediating, intervening, and making arrests to maintain community peace and improve quality of life.
  • Completing reports, testifying in court, maintaining Department vehicle and equipment standards.
  • Coordinating with emergency services, organizations, and law enforcement agencies, performing specialized functions in enforcement areas.
  • Upholding professionalism and values of the Addison Police Department, ensuring adherence to rules and regulations.
  • May be required to perform additional duties during special Town events.
  • Performing related duties as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

Sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university OR High School diploma/GED with two (2) years of full-time, paid, sworn law enforcement experience OR High School/GED diploma with three (3) years of active duty military service. Must possess TCOLE Peace Officer License. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with colleagues, Town officials, and external partners. Clear criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen are required.

Knowledge of:

  • Modern police principles, methods, and practices.
  • State, Federal, and local laws and procedures.
  • Texas criminal justice system and court procedures.
  • Duties, powers, and limitations of a Police Officer.
  • Investigative procedures and observation protocols.
  • Local community issues and resources.
  • Work safety practices.

Skill in:

  • Applying criminal laws to information and evidence.
  • Investigating crime scenes and recognizing evidence.
  • Operating law enforcement tools and equipment safely.
  • Collaborating with different agencies.
  • Establishing effective relationships.
  • Using business software and communication effectively.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must possess Basic Peace Officer certification from TCOLE and a valid Texas Driver's License. Must obtain TCOLE Peace Officer License if not already possessed.
