The Museum of Life and Science, one of North Carolina's top family destinations, has been a beloved Durham institution for 75 years.

The Museum features 84 acres of exhibits, experiences, and outdoor exploration, including one of the East Coast's largest butterfly conservatories and a two-story science center.

Description

Position Objective:


Support the Museum's mission by maintaining a positive and proactive work environment, delivering an exemplary level of service during a guest's visit from check-in to departure, and being knowledgeable about Museum programs, events, exhibits, procedures, and products.

Responsibilities
Able to share knowledge and excitement of our exhibits and range through our 84 acre campus providing a stellar guest experience
Warmly welcome visitors and provide them with information concerning prices, daily programs, exhibits and events to help facilitate a great experience and foster repeat visits
Sell admission, membership and train tickets while providing exceptional customer service - will be Lead in partner area at least once per month
Be the expert in your assigned area as an example for the remainder of the team - deliver consistently excellent guest experiences and be fully knowledgeable on museum programs and policies
Anticipate guests' needs and provide guest feedback to appropriate Museum department
Foster a positive staff culture and work environment
Be cross trained in all Guest Relations roles including admissions, ranger, parking and group check-in and remain flexible to fill in any role on a given day
Lead training in your area of expertise for current and new team members under the guidance of the Guest Relations Manager or Assistant Manager
Assist MOD with opening and closing procedures, taking radio calls, facility preparation, cash counting/ drawer preparation, clearing the campus and emergency response
Perform regular campus checks to ensure a clean, welcoming, friendly environment for guests
Ability to work outdoors in all weather
Transport guests and staff in golf cart and museum road vehicles as needed
Other indoor and outdoor duties as assigned

Actual Pay Rate:
$17.50/hour

Position Requirements
At least three years of direct customer service experience including cash handling
Keen observation skills and desire to be proactive about visitor needs and the guest environment
Attention to detail for accurate processing of admission, membership and ticket sales while maintaining a high standard of service
Strong interest in engaging children and adults of all ages through curiosity, discovery, inquiry-based and social learning in the exhibits
Ability to understand and consistently apply museum policies
Interest in assisting with training
Enthusiastic and engaging attitude
Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies with provided training
Will work a flexible schedule including at least one weekend day per week plus occasional evenings and holidays
Can embrace the Museum mission
Ability to work outside in all weather
Physically able to be on one's feet for up to 8 hours and travel distances of up to 1.5 miles on various terrain
Valid driver's license
Able to lift up to 30 lbs.

Desired:
Coursework or experience in Math, Science, Environmental Education, Wildlife, Museum Studies or similar field
Supervisory or lead experience
CPR/First aid certification
Conversational Spanish, French, Mandarin
