As part of HVAC Cooling, SPX Cooling Technologies is a leader in high quality industrial HVAC equipment used to cool large facilities like hospitals, data centers, and power plants. How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Maintenance and Capital Projects Manager, you will be a key operations leader for the facility located in Olathe, KS. Your responsibilities will include leading and developing a group of hourly maintenance employees as well as a MRO Buyer. This includes scheduling of shift work and overtime for three shifts to ensure efficient operations, maintain high safety standards, deliver quality and on-time service. This position is in a fast-paced environment and requires the ability to embrace change. The incumbent will work with other peers in leadership roles to ensure that all machines and processes are maintained to create an efficient and safe work environment. This role is responsible for building and sustaining the Preventative Maintenance system for all equipment, buildings, and grounds. This role is responsible for identifying, installing, and effectively running Maintenance Management System to enable the organization to move to predictive maintenance and reduce unplanned downtime. The incumbent oversees all work outsourced to contractors and vendors (i.e. lawn care, snow removal, and HVAC work), and works with the MRO buyer to ensure that all repair parts are specified correctly, and that delivery time is in line with production needs.

The successful Maintenance and Capital Projects Manager will have strong leadership abilities, a strategic mindset, a passion for operational excellence, and experience driving continuous improvement.

  1. Management/Leadership:
  • Actively participate as a member of the plant leadership team to help determine strategy and direction for plant operations.
  • Responsible for leading maintenance team members, providing technical and problem-solving support for them.
  • Manage timekeeping system for maintenance crew by setting their shifts and approving timecards.
  • Supervise, coach, mentor, motivate, and provide performance feedback for team members promoting a positive working environment.
  • Foster open communication and promote a culture of trust and engagement, embodying the SPX core values.
  • Actively support employee training and development by identifying training needs, developing training plans, to enhance employee skills and knowledge.
  • Proactively address employee and labor relations issues and challenges in a positive and proactive manner.

2. Safety:

  • Foster a culture of safety by promoting and enforcing adherence to company safety programs, policies, trainings, safety measures, guidelines, and regulations to team members, contractors, and vendors.
  • Serve as champion of safety, encouraging employees to identify risks and working together to resolve issues.

3. Operational Execution:

  • Responsible for the oversight of day-to-day maintenance activities, managing and assigning maintenance work through a Maintenance Management System, as well as the successful execution of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Champion and provide direction on capital projects of a complex nature (Up to ~$10M).
  • Project planning from beginning to end by participating in setting objectives, developing a project timeline, estimation of cost, obtaining quotes, scheduling, and communicating project status reports.
  • Maintain, repair, and install machines, tools, and equipment, ensuring that maintenance assignments are conducted in an efficient, proactive and safe manner.
  • Initiate, schedule, and perform preventive maintenance to support manufacturing goals.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of materials and services. Manage contractors when working on-site.
  • Participate in audits and risk review processes as required and needed.

4. Continuous Improvement:

  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize machine productivity, reduce cost, and improve overall operational efficiency.
  • Set, monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with the site's objectives and strategic plans.
  • In partnership with plant leadership team, implement long term planning activities designed to enhance operations and manage capital projects.
  • Participate in other projects as assigned that relate to the overall goals of the department and organization.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment that creates highly engineered, customized products
  • Experience in unionized manufacturing environment
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate across organizational levels (production employees, engineering, sales, leadership)
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve goals
  • Proven experience attracting, retaining, motivating, and developing high performing, diverse teams
  • Demonstrated ability to lead continuous improvement, lean savings, and process improvements
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and the ability to drive a culture of safety
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in utilizing maintenance management systems for data analysis and reporting
  • Skills in Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of HVAC industry

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • MBA or degree in mechanical or industrial engineering or management preferred

Travel & Working Environment

  • Onsite; plant and office environment.
  • Plant environment and may be exposed to bad weather, excessive heat and/or noise
