Job Title: Security Police Officer at Hampton Roads Transit

This job involves professional and technical security police work. The employee will work extra duty for HRT within the city of Norfolk, on HRT's light rail system, or as assigned in Norfolk. The ideal candidate must be a Norfolk police officer in the City of Norfolk.


  • Policing HRT property working extra duty for HRT as a Norfolk police officer on "The Tide" or other areas in Norfolk on a regular basis.
  • Preventing crimes and security incidents at all HRT facilities.
  • Protecting all HRT assets from any criminal activities, investigating, and documenting incidents daily in the log.
  • Providing security and code enforcement to support the light rail system as per regional directive.
  • Providing ordinance enforcement duties on a schedule approved by HRT Security Manager.
  • Performing various functions such as patrolling within The Tide light rail vehicles, assisting in inspecting passengers, issuing citations for fare evasion, providing customer assistance, and notifying control of any emergencies.
  • Conducting random, mobile security patrols at the VMSF Park-and-Ride lots.
  • Preparing reports of security incidents and providing them to supervisors.
  • Providing security services throughout the city of Norfolk as required, including bus transfer stations, HRT ferries, and other areas that need off-duty officers.
  • Completing necessary training courses and familiarizing with potential hazards related to the HRT system.
  • Ensuring all security issues are properly documented.
  • Assisting in resolving security-related personal problems.
  • Enforcing parking policies at HRT Park and Rides.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Understanding of criminal statutes affecting police/security work.
  • Ability to work under pressure and stressful situations.
  • Skill in using miscellaneous computer applications.

Required Software Knowledge and Skills:

Proficiency in using computer systems and software applications like Microsoft Word and Excel.

Performing all job duties safely to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from harm. Promoting safety awareness and following safety procedures and policies.


Training and/or Education:

Current certification as a Norfolk police officer in the city of Norfolk


Required Experience:

Three years of security or law enforcement work as a sworn officer.


Licenses or Certificates:

Must possess a valid Driver's License issued from the jurisdiction of residence.


Special Requirements:

Minimum 21 years of age, US Citizen, and no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.


FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt


Physical Demands:

The physical demands include work both inside and outside the property, exposure to inclement weather and crisis situations, and shift work.
