Position Summary

While reporting directly to the Manufacturing Manager, the Mechanical Machine Builder will plan, organize, and execute all phases of a machine build.

The Mechanical Machine Builder will work with the engineering team as well as Project Managers to ensure all pieces and components are correctly built in order to optimize system performance.


Key Functions & Responsibilities
Organize, plan, and execute all phases of machine build
Assemble, debug, modify, and install custom designed special purpose machinery
Integrate purchased mechanical components, manufactured details and sub-assemblies to construct automated machinery for custom applications
Perform critical precision alignments and set-ups of mechanical components and systems and take measures to ensure integrity of set-up
Install pneumatic components and sub-systems as per supplied schematics and specifications, plumbing, testing and optimizing system performance for cycle time and equipment durability concerns
Identify any technical issues with supplied materials, components and equipment
Identify and correct mechanical deficiencies in the build and accurately document as-built changes
Work with engineering, electrical, and controls departments to see jobs through to completion
Participate in equipment tear down and packaging at initial assembly site and reassemble and test at customer site as required
Identify all tools, fasteners, miscellaneous items and equipment required to complete tasks efficiently and work with Project Manager to secure all required material in a timely manner
Lead machine debug effort
Adhere to company's safety policies to create a safe work environment for employees

Competencies
Journeyman tenure or related experience as toolmaker/machine builder
Demonstrated experience in building equipment utilizing the following technologies: robotic systems, high speed index transfer (dial, indexing chain, walking beam etc.), pneumatic actuators, servo motors and actuators, hydraulics, power transmission
Familiar with modern electrical controls technologies as they apply to automated equipment (e.g. PLC's, HMI's, safety devices, and instrumentation)
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills as applied to machinery and equipment
Capable of using milling machine, lathe, surface grinder
Ability to weld common metals (MIG/TIG) encountered in machine building a plus
Skilled in the use of rigging equipment including cranes and forklifts
Knowledgeable of Machinery Safeguarding Principles and Standards as it applies to production work cells ability to identify shortcomings or deficiencies and correct
Good working knowledge of pneumatic/hydraulic control circuits
Ability to work overtime as required
Assist with equipment installation and start-up at customer sites on occasion
Proven ability to perform under strict time constraints; flexibility and adaptability to work long hours or alternate shifts when project schedules dictate

Physical Demands
Frequently lift up to 50-75 pounds
Routinely carry tool bag to work station
Frequently stand for long periods of time; frequently required to walk
Consistently bend, stoop, reach, twist, crawl under/over, push/pull
Routinely climb on ladders and work in tight spaces

Education
Required
High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience
Required
5+ years' experience in machine building preferably automotive related with experience in a high speed manufacturing environment a plus
