United Way Miami, Inc. is hiring an Early Childhood Mentor Teacher to join our team. As Early Childhood Mentor Teacher is responsible for planning and coordinating the implementation of the centers education program for children ages 0-3 or 3-5, by designing delivery and coordinating program development, facilitating of interdisciplinary collaboration, and providing administrative support.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty Interaction/Supervision:

  • Provides reflective supervision to support develop and evaluate their performance through a process of inquiry that encourages their understanding and articulation of the rationale for their practices.
  • In collaboration with the family engagement staff develop plans for classrooms and families of children with special needs.
  • Get to know the services provided to children and families with disabilities in the program to serve them better.

Major Responsibilities/Education Program Development

  • Plans and coordinates the centers education program for children 0-3 or 3-5 in conjunction with the Demonstration School Director.
  • Monitors and ensures education plans and other required documentation for children are completed.
  • Regularly completes and documents classroom observations as required.
  • The Master Teacher spends one day of the week in the classroom, doing observation and coaching.
  • Ensures teacher-child interactions and instruction is responsive, intentional, and developmentally appropriate to ensure children are provided socially supportive, organized, and instructional meaningful interactions to support their development (i.e., social-emotional, physical, cognitive and language) and learning (i.e., literacy, math, science, technology, social studies, and the arts);
  • Schedules and protects time for regular collaboration among the teaching team to review data, and reflect on childrens progress and teaching practice.
  • Coordinates study groups to give opportunities for teachers to unpack early learning and development standards, examine practice, and together design innovative learning experiences.
  • Implement with classroom teachers formal cycles or reflective content-based coaching.
  • Use of child screening, assessment, and progress data to inform lesson planning, individualization, and the intensification of instruction in the areas of oral language, dual language, and literacy development and skills; social-emotional and self-regulation development and skills; numeracy and problem-solving skills.

Professional Development:

  • Team Lesson Planning- Schedules and protects time for regular collaboration among the teaching team to review data, reflect on childrens progress and teaching practices, and plan for interaction, instruction, and family engagement.
  • Reflective Practice Groups/Communities of Practice - Facilitates or coordinates reflective practice groups or communities of practice for teachers to engage in shared reflection, inquiry, and professional learning. Facilitates or coordinates collaborative lesson study opportunities for teachers to unpack early learning and development standards, discuss childrens progress, examine practice and together design innovative learning experiences.
  • Coaching - Implement formal cycles of reflective-content-based coaching (planning conversation, observation, reflecting conversation) to support knowledge transfer and improvements in daily practice.

Administration:

  • Ensures all assigned program reports are completed and submitted on a timely basis. This includes Early/Head Start performance standards, Educare core features, state and local licensing requirements, and other funder requirements related to education met.
  • Monitors and ensures education plans and other required documentation for children and classrooms are completed.
  • Maintains inventory of all classroom equipment.
  • Ensure all confidential information is protected.
  • Complete Education staff performance management plan.
  • Establishes education staff schedules, including approval of time off requests, and coordinates placement of classroom substitutes and floaters, as needed.
  • Actively involved in the recruitment and hiring process of educational staff.
  • Participates in developing program policies, service delivery plans, and ongoing monitoring of program quality.
  • Assumes some responsibility of the Demonstration School Director during the Directors absences.

Interdisciplinary Work and Collaboration:

  • Participate in the research program partnership with the Local Evaluation Partner, coordinating timely feedback to teaching teams.
  • Collaborate with Family Engagement in efforts to engage and involve parents with the program, staff, and child development and learning.
  • Ensures that Family/Child Reviews (FCRs) are scheduled the plan is implemented and progress is monitored;

Faculty/Parent Interactions: Acknowledge and respond to all parents and visitors in a friendly, courteous, and professional demeanor. Invite input on the childs development and care. Communicate daily including conferences, events, and meetings. Share resources with parents. Schedule, develop plans, and conduct home visits.

Leadership: Take the lead in guiding the team in developing classroom goals and action plans. Ensure that daily responsibilities are complete and jobs are shared. Orient new team members.

Health/Safety/Nutrition: Keep the environment safe, organized, and accessible to children. Complete appropriate documentation to report incidents and accident paperwork.

Professionalism: Keep abreast of the latest trends and research in the early childhood field. Demonstrate knowledge and flexibility in child care practices, continuing ongoing professional growth. Maintain confidentiality. Attend all required meetings/trainings.

Teamwork: Establish and maintain a relationship of cooperation and respect. Participate in classroom and Center responsibilities. Participate in teaching team, communicating directly and resolving conflicts quickly and professionally.

Physical Demands: Follow state, federal, and UWM guidelines. Ensure childrens safety. Demonstrate a full range of motion. Be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Supervise and interact with children outdoors. Respond immediately and appropriately to multiple or unexpected situations or emergencies. Maintain mental and physical alertness and an appropriate energy level to perform essential job requirements.

Education Requirements: Bachelors degree in early childhood education and at least five years of experience as an infant, toddler, or preschool teacher. Masters degree in early childhood education or equivalent course work in early childhood preferred.

Additional Educational Requirements: Clearance of background check by the Department of Children and Family Services. A biannual physical examination and TB test are required for initial employment and continued employment.
