The job openings will be spread across different cities in the Penn Power area such as Cranberry, Clark, Hartstown, and New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Position Summary
All Journey Line Worker roles and their career progression are under the representation of UWUA Local 140.

This job position falls under the DOT (Department of Transportation) covered category and is subject to random drug/alcohol screenings.

We are seeking skilled Journey Line Workers to operate across our service area in Distribution. Most open positions are in Pennsylvania, but additional locations and roles could open based on evolving business needs.
Journey Line Workers are accountable for constructing and maintaining electric power systems, restoring electric service for commercial, industrial, agricultural, and residential customers. They are responsible for tasks such as testing, framing, and setting poles, climbing poles, working in confined spaces, splicing and terminating cables.
Our Linemen should have completed a federal or state-sanctioned apprenticeship (with documented proof) and/or IBEW-sponsored line worker apprenticeship. Work is mostly outdoors and in all weather conditions. Linemen must drive safely, work extended hours, relocate to new headquarters when asked (General Construction Positions), and wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.

FirstEnergy discloses the hourly rate it anticipates paying for this position in good faith at the time of job posting. This rate is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The initial wage rate for this role is $40.97 per hour, with a maximum rate of $44.88, varying by job location. This wage rate is determined by several factors including skills, education, licenses, experience, and geographic location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travels to different job sites within the assigned region (for General Construction).
  • Assesses daily job requirements and provides input for the day's work.
  • Handles loading/unloading tools, materials, and supplies at team headquarters and job sites.
  • Lifts, pulls, and carries various materials and equipment to/from job sites.
  • Climbs poles using boot hooks or aerial lift.
  • Conducts pole testing, framing, setting/anchoring, stringing electric lines, and installing cross-arms.
  • Executes substation switching, installs/replaces switches, circuit equipment, meters, and streetlights.
  • Energizes transformers, takes voltage readings, troubleshoots and determines repairs on overhead/underground lines.
  • Uses hand/power tools, digs holes for poles, climbs ladders/poles/towers, works at heights above 35', sets grounds, and works with live circuits.
  • Installs underground structures, locates, pulls, removes, splices, or terminates cables.
  • Operates hydraulic equipment such as drills, boom trucks, diggers, pole tampers, hydraulic jacks, and bucket trucks after certification.
  • Utilizes lift equipment like aerial lifts and line truck booms, forklifts for material handling, and drives vehicles to access job sites.


Qualifications

  • Completed federal or state-sanctioned line worker apprenticeship with documented proof (e.g., IBEW Journeyman Lineman A Ticket) or union-sponsored apprenticeship.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience as a Journey level Line Worker in electric utilities or lines construction.
  • Possession of a valid Class A driving permit, DMV medical exam clearance by employment start date.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Capability to work in adverse weather conditions, drive in various road conditions, work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Provisional hires must complete training within a year from hire date.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment requirements: drug screening, background check, Post Offer Physical (POPA).
  • Proficient in rubber gloving, hot stick procedures, transmission/distribution work, underground operations, various voltages, effective teamwork, communication skills.
  • Mandatory completion of pre-employment tests for current FirstEnergy employees.
