Understanding Our Work: Ending Hunger

As a full-time driver at Good Shepherd Food Bank, you'll work close to home and have your nights and weekends free You'll travel locally to deliver products and materials to our partners while adhering to local laws and following safety policies and regulations.

Your Role in Our Mission:

Our team of drivers are key Good Shepherd Food Bank ambassadors to our community partners and donors' network. Our drivers interact extensively with coworkers, partner agencies, suppliers, volunteers, and clients while safely transporting loads to and from designated locations. GSFB Drivers must follow the letter and spirit of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, including maintenance of duty status records and pre- and post-trip vehicle safety inspections.

In This Position, You Will:
  • Communicate and coordinate activities with the customer service/dispatch team.
  • Collect and verify delivery instructions; communicate variances in routing instructions and appointments.
  • Obey and follow applicable traffic laws.
  • Secure cargo and properly arrange and balance loads within the vehicle.
  • Maintain a detailed log of working hours in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Ensure any mechanical issues with the vehicle are corrected before driving.
  • Plan trips to meet delivery schedules.
  • Report defects, accidents, and violations with vehicles.
  • Perform daily vehicle maintenance, including refueling, cleaning, etc.
  • Loan and unload vehicles with forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspection reports.
  • Record deliveries.
  • Verify loads for accuracy.
  • Communicate potential hazards to supervisors and dispatchers.
  • Assess donated products based on food safety policies and follow appropriate procedures.
Operate Equipment:
  • Tandem and single-axle tractors with 40 to 53-foot reefer trailer(s) equipped with lift gates.
  • The equipment is late-model and leased from local companies.
  • Service and maintenance of equipment performed off-site.
  • Powered walk behind jacks.
Schedule Your Life and Work:
  • When weekend work and overtime are needed, we ask rather than tell.
  • The typical work week will be approximately 40 to 50 hours.
Milestones of Success:

In the first 30 days, you will:
  • Participate in and complete our onboarding and orientation program, which includes safety training, a review of organizational policies, and on-the-road training.
  • Complete training to learn and understand safety standards and driving skill basics.
  • Complete training to learn and understand service requirements, regulations, and compliance hours.
  • Learn how to complete routine truck inspections and maintenance.
In the first 90 days, you will:
  • Focus on learning the ropes with on-the-job training that supports route familiarity, load management for safety and efficiency, and time management tools and techniques that support consistent on-time deliveries.
  • Develop relationships with customer service and other support teams with highly effective communication and partnership.
In the first six months, you will:
  • Demonstrate driving habits and route planning oriented to fuel efficiency.
  • Maintain cargo security that minimizes product loss or damage during transport.
  • Continue to develop highly effective partnerships with customer service and support teams.

Requirements

As a Successful Candidate, You Have:
  • A valid Maine Class A driving license.
  • A minimum of one year of verifiable CDL experience, food-related experience a plus.
  • The proven ability to work steadily and independently with minimum supervision and to follow standard operating procedures.
  • Adaptability and foresight to handle unexpected situations (traffic, weather conditions, etc.).
  • A willingness to submit to background/drug checks and provide employment recommendations.
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment physical, road test, & drug screening.

Use of display terminal or computer, cellular phone, GPS or navigation software and equipment is required. The employee must read, comprehend, and communicate in written and verbal format. Vision abilities required include day and night vision, near and distant vision, and the ability to adjust vision focus quickly. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to freezing, snowy, wet, and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office or moderately loud when in the field.
