Work Unit Overview:
The Missoula Unit of the Montana DNRC is responsible for fire protection and management activities in Granite, Missoula, Mineral, and Ravalli counties. Their Fire Program focuses on protecting approximately 670,000 acres of land from wildfires, especially in wildland urban interface areas.
Job Overview:
The Fire Operations Specialist position at the Missoula Unit is essential for providing leadership to engine crews both on and off the field. Responsibilities may also include tasks related to Trust Land Management Division duties.
Essential Functions:
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise various fire management activities
- Direct ground and air operations during wildfires
- Investigate fire origins and causes
- Ensure readiness of fire personnel and equipment
- Serve as Duty Officer during fire season
- Provide training on fire prevention and safety
- Supervise seasonal fire staff
- Manage maintenance of equipment and vehicles
- Assist with Trust Land Management activities

Qualifications:
This position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of five years of experience in fire management. The candidate must have leadership skills, Incident Command System training, and the ability to attain relevant certifications.

Special Requirements:
The role is physically demanding and involves fieldwork. The incumbent must be prepared to work long hours and make quick decisions during fire suppression activities. An annual Wildland Fire Work Capacity Test is mandatory for this position.
