Job Description:


The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting the surgical team to ensure the success and safety of operative procedures.

This position works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and reports directly to Surgical Services management.

The Surgical Technologist I is responsible for supporting system-wide surgical initiatives and practices, as well as actively participating in the safety plan for surgical operations.

Intermountain Alta View Hospital, established in 1982, provides top-notch inpatient and outpatient medical care.

Alta View Hospital is a 57-bed Level IV trauma center renowned for its exceptional women's health services, labor and delivery, emergency and trauma care, imaging, lab services, acute and intensive care, surgical services, physical therapy, as well as specialized medical services such as the sleep lab, heart care, and infusion services - all delivered in a caring, compassionate, and family-friendly environment.


Located in the southeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley, Alta View Hospital is the preferred healthcare facility for surrounding communities including Sandy, Draper, White City, Cottonwood Heights, and Midvale.

Shifts and Scheduling

We offer convenient 10 and 12-hour shifts Monday - Friday between 7AM - 7PM, ensuring no night shifts or weekends. Rotating weekend on-call duty is required every 8 weeks.

  • 10-hour shifts, 7AM-5PM
  • 12-hour shifts, 7AM-7PM
The Surgical Technologist has the opportunity for advancement to levels II or III in the field.

Job Essentials

  • Ensuring all surgical items and rooms meet sterilization criteria.
  • Maintaining a sterile field and a safe environment.
  • Addressing sharps and fire safety protocols.
  • Preparing rooms and instruments for surgical procedures, and assisting with sterile processing.
  • Supporting surgical staff during procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Cleaning rooms post-procedure and preparing for the next patient.
  • Identifying and responding to emergency situations with sound judgment.

Entry Rate:
$22.80 or higher based on experience

  • Surgical Tech II

Entry Rate:
$25.08 or higher, based on experience

  • Surgical Tech III

Entry Rate:
$27.60 or higher based on experience

  • Shift Details: Full Time - 40 hours weekly
  • Location: Operating Rooms - Alta View Hospital (Sandy, Utah)
  • Shift Details: Monday - Friday, 10-hour shifts (7AM-5PM) or 12-hour shifts (7AM - 7PM).No nights, weekend call every 8 weeks.
This position may be filled as a Surgical Tech II or Surgical Tech III based on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program (ORT)
  • Or graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months, but not currently eligible to sit for Tech in Surgery exam (NCCT)
  • Or two years of scrub tech experience in hospital or military surgical services within the last three years.
  • Or hired into a role specifically for on-the-job training in a rural hospital.
  • Or International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Active National Certification as an OR Tech in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist. Certification is expected within the specified timeframe.
  • Certification is mandatory after being hired:
  • Surgical Technologists who graduated from an accredited program must certify within one year of hire.
  • Surgical Technologists who have graduated from non-accredited programs or completed on-the-job or military training should aim to certify as soon as possible.
  • Managers will work with new hires to determine certification course, projected certification timeline, and track progress.

Continuous need for clear vision, manual dexterity for intricate tasks, and the ability to lift and move heavy objects.

* and -Frequent interactions with healthcare providers and patients necessitate quick and accurate verbal communication and understanding of spoken information, particularly during emergencies.

* and -Manual dexterity is crucial for handling complex equipment with precision, including computer tasks and medication preparation.

* and -Physical strength and agility are required to lift, transfer patients, retrieve supplies, and navigate busy hospital environments.

* and -Standing for extended periods in protective gear may be necessary.
