Brand Journalist

Responsibilities


Responsible to the Managing Editor of _Wheaton _Magazine for writing and editing tasks that support Wheaton College's storytelling and magazine strategies.

This is a full-time position.

Duties

  • Conduct journalistic interviews and research.
  • W rite and edit press releases, news stories, feature articles, magazine articles, and other copy to promote and elevate the Wheaton College brand among key audiences. The Brand Journalist is responsible for generating magazine articles, press releases, and news stories per year.
  • Publish articles online through the Wheaton College website's content management system.
  • Copy edit, fact check, and proofread news, magazine articles, web, and other content prepared by writers, marketing specialists, and campus partners.
  • Optimize web content for SEO.
  • Contribute news, magazine, and social media story ideas.
  • Manage web magazine publishing processes.
  • With the Managing Editor of _Wheaton _Magazine, meet and correspond with writers, editors, designers, and photographers to keep all parties updated on plans, progress, and needs.
  • Support the news, stories, and web magazine editorial calendar(s).
  • With Managing Editor, oversee magazine content creation process from writing through editing and publishing.
  • With Managing Editor, supervise editorial intern.
  • Participate in storygeneration meetings, marketing meetings, copy review meetings, and approval meetings.
  • Ensure all written storytelling produced by the Department of Marketing Communications meets editorial style guidelines, is accurate, and meets messaging and tone guidelines.
  • Monitor competitor storytelling techniques and strategies.
  • May provide assistance with magazine print fulfillment processes.
  • May provide assistance of a general office nature for immediate supervisor.
  • Assist as assigned in training, scheduling, and overseeing students and freelancers.
  • Assist with i nternal and crisis communications as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in English or Journalism or a related field
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fastpaced and demanding environment
  • Handson experience with content management systems
  • Familiarity with SEO and keyword research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently
  • Good organization skills and ability to be agile and adaptable
  • Ability to work well under pressure and supportive of change
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite, and ability to easily utilize filesharing tools like Box.

Physical Requirements


The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to 25 pounds.
