Job Responsibilities:
  • Support the mission and design principles of The Gathering Place.
  • Embody The Gathering Place Collective norms.
  • Have an assigned caseload of students with IEPs and/or 504s that the SPED teacher is responsible for, including all case managing duties.
  • Provide services for a caseload of children, including directly providing the academic and behavioral services outlined in an IEP or 504.
  • Oversee the development of a child's IEP or 504, its implementation, progress monitoring, and re-evaluations as needed.
  • Oversee the development and follow-through of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with an IEP or 504 (as applicable).
  • Help schedule, coordinate, and be fully prepared for Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings or 504 meetings.
  • Engage in ARD or 504 meetings with utmost professionalism.
  • Work collaboratively with all teachers at the school to ensure students with an IEP or 504 receive an inclusive and high-quality experience during all their classes. SPED teachers support homeroom, arts, and enrichment teachers in the implementation of a child's IEP by modeling strategies in real-time, sharing best practices, co-teaching, and collaborating together.
  • Special Education teachers can be assigned to provide push-in services in classrooms or run small groups in a resource setting, life skills setting, or adaptive behavior setting for periods of the day. This may also change throughout the school year as the needs of the school and the student body change
  • Provide training to SPED aides who service children on the SPED teacher's caseload.
    • Needed skills, knowledge, and competencies are child-dependent and entirely based on the IEP. SPED teachers will provide training to the SPED aides according to the needs of the child and to best meet the IEP. This may require ongoing training from SPED teachers to SPED aides throughout the year as caseloads shift or in response to data collected through progress monitoring and shifts needed to best support each child.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents completely and on time.
  • Embrace a culture of feedback to continue growing in skill in supporting children's learning and development
  • Collaborate effectively with all teachers, all staff, and school leaders.
  • Support and collaborate with teachers on developing accommodations and modifications, as applicable.
  • For teachers assigned to the adaptive behavior or life skills class, create and submit lesson plans for feedback.
  • Use assessment data and data within progress reports to best support all students' academic performance and growth.
  • Prepare narratives as well as other periodic updates of progress and student learning.
  • Send regular caregiver communication for students on caseload through the school-wide communication platform.
  • Respond to all caregiver messages through our school-wide communication platform within time windows set forth by the school.
  • Participate in the schools' daily functions, including arrival and dismissal duties, lunch duties, recess monitoring, and coverage.
  • Attend critical school events such as professional development days, school events for students, and school events for caregivers and/or community members.
  • Meet professional obligations, including timeliness and consistency in meeting deadlines, among all other policies outlined in the Staff Handbook.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Special Education Teachers may have the opportunity to lead professional development sessions on topics that they are passionate about as part of Professional Learning
  • Communities (which will occur during the school day) as identified by School Leadership.

  • This is a full-time, 10-month exempt position.
  • The Gathering Place pays into TRS (Teacher Retirement System of Texas).

  • This role averages two planning periods each day. About half of the weekly planning periods are dedicated to professional development and collaborative work, whether via coaching, working with school leadership or collaborating through professional learning communities (PLCs). Planning periods may be decreased based on staff absences or lack of substitutes.
  • This role may have the opportunity to lead professional development sessions on topics that applicants are passionate about as part of Professional Learning Communities (which will occur during the school day) or on PD days.
  • This role may be asked to perform additional responsibilities related to ongoing needs of the school throughout the year.
  • This role may be asked to serve on campus or district committees.
  • The workday is 7:15 - 4:00 pm. Some evening events will be required like exhibitions of learning (showcases) or school events.
  • There will be one, one-hour staff meeting after school from 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM every two weeks that are required for this role.
  • There are three weeks of required summer professional development starting mid-July and several professional development days built into the calendar throughout the year.

  • Special Education EC-12 Certification
  • Must have at least one year of teaching experience
