Job Summary:

A Commercial Loan Officer (CLO) is the first level of commercial lending and would work alone or in conjunction with a seasoned loan officer to develop a portfolio.

This position would work primarily with C & I loans, but also may handle some CRE loans.

A CLO grows his or her portfolio by providing excellent customer service and making sound quality loans to existing and potential customers.

A CLO also builds customer relationships through obtaining deposit accounts and selling other services to a loan customer. A CLO particularly handles less complex loans. Being less experienced in his or her position, the CLO may need guidance from more seasoned loan officers.

Listing of Key Responsibilities:

  • Works especially with less complex loans for existing or potential customers.
  • Develops and maintains a loan portfolio by attending to the needs of clients seeking loans that may involve unsecured funds and/or credit secured by mortgages or other collateral.
  • Represents the Bank by serving as the ongoing point of contact for his or clients whether actually developed or assigned to his or her portfolio by the Bank
  • Makes calls on existing and potential customers to develop information concerning their businesses, needs, desires, abilities and earnings to determine if a loan may meet their needs and be an acceptable risk to the Bank.
  • Keeps business development and credit risk in appropriate balance.
  • Performs job responsibilities with an understanding of the importance of and in compliance with applicable Bank policies, procedures and processes, as well as applicable external laws and regulations.
  • Follows all dual control procedures required to maintain internal controls in performing assigned duties.
  • Uses sound judgment and caution, reviews up to date customer financial information, makes onsite visits as appropriate and asks for a second opinion from his or her Senior Manager, the ACCO, the CCO or another Loan Officer before making loan decision (new loan, loan renewal or draw authorization) within assigned lending authority or recommending a loan to the Officers' Loan Committee or beyond for approval.
  • Puts together loan package for presentation to applicable Loan Committee with guidance from County President or other seasoned loan officers.
  • Ensures that all loan documentation is complete and in accordance with lending policy.
  • Maintains a balanced focus of serving and expanding business for existing clients and developing new clients through a well designed ongoing call program with the objective of meeting needs in both cases.
  • Opens deposits accounts for and sells related services to his loan clients, as well as deposit only commercial or business clients.
  • Follows-up quickly with clients to resolve any potential loan quality issues.
  • Represents the Bank in his assigned market area by becoming involved in the civic, cultural, charitable and/or educational activities of the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QualificationsEducation Required:
Undergraduate Degree (preferably in Business, Finance or a Related Field), Formal Commercial Credit Training (Sponsored by RMA or equivalent; Formal Commercial Sales Training (ABA, BAI or equivalent); and banking training in general would all be a plus

Experience Required:
3+ years of experience with at least 1 year of credit analysis experience

Knowledge and Skills Required:
In depth knowledge of commercial lending and all applicable laws, regulations and compliance requirements.

Strong communication, organizational, time management, sales and analytical credit analysis/underwriting skills to determine the customer needs and credit worthiness; match these needs with the correct services; and close the sale, if appropriate.

P/C skills for communication and analysis purposes. Strong people skills for both working with existing and prospective customers, as well as less experienced Loan Officers.

Key Business Relationships:
Interacts internally with CCO, Loan Operations staff, County President and other Loan Officers. Interacts externally with existing and prospective customers.
