ROLE OVERVIEW:


This role plays a fundamental part in providing instruction for a variety of National YMCA swimming programs, catering to participants of all ages and skill levels. By imparting essential swimming abilities, each participant is equipped to progress to the next stage of their aquatic education.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and hold a current YMCA Swim Instructor or Red Cross WSI certification upon employment. If Red Cross certified, completion of the YMCA Course is required within 90 days (or at the earliest opportunity) of commencement. Professional Rescue CPR or Basic Life Support, AED, and First Aid certification is mandatory upon hiring.

Applicants are also expected to undertake various training programs within specific timeframes post-hire to align with our organizational values and standards.


REQUIRED SKILLS:

Demonstrated proficiency in communication and interpersonal skills is essential.

The ability to engage effectively with individuals of all ages and backgrounds within the community is crucial.


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

The role necessitates the capacity to lift and transport a minimum of 50 pounds. Individuals needing to lift more than 50 pounds should seek assistance. Stamina for prolonged aerobic activity, ability to follow detailed instructions, and potential outdoor work are required. Maintaining alertness, along with adequate auditory and visual capabilities for monitoring environments and communicating effectively, is vital.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 1. Provide direct instructional guidance to each swimming participant across diverse classes.
  • 2. Exemplify all facets of the SMART pledge.
  • 3. Adhere to YMCA of the USA aquatic standards for each skill level during instruction.
  • 4. Assist in supervising children in pool and locker room areas.
  • 5. Possess thorough knowledge of emergency protocols and their application.
  • 6. Share progress updates with parents regarding each child's development.
  • 7. Maintain comprehensive lesson plans for substitute instructors for every class session.
  • 8. Ensure accurate record-keeping and issuance of progress cards at the conclusion of each session.
  • 9. Uphold professionalism when interacting with staff and participants throughout the YMCA premises.
  • Establish a secure and nurturing environment by promptly reporting any suspicious activities and maintaining facility cleanliness and organization. Assist in the appropriate storage of aquatic equipment.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings and training sessions.

B. Execute any other duties as delegated.
