Location:
Hanover, NH
Open Date:
Nov 6, 2023
Description:

The Program in Quantitative Social Sciences at Dartmouth College invites applications for a postdoctoral appointment. This appointment will be under the direction of Professors Herbert Chang (Quantitative Social Science, QSS) and Feng Fu (Mathematics). Areas of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • Utilize multimodal machine learning, AI, and game theory to study public health, politics, or the candidate’s own intellectual interests, with an initial focus on the 2024 American Presidential Election in collaboration with faculty in QSS and the Department of Mathematics.

  • Develop social network targeting methods for increasing vaccine confidence in social media platforms using open-sourced public data.

Qualified candidates should have a background related to one or more of the research areas described above and a keen interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. The initial appointment is for one year with possibility of renewal for a second year. In the second year, the position includes teaching one course, to be determined in consultation with both QSS and Math. The start date for this position is flexible, but could begin as early as January 20, 2024.

Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College is an Ivy League university that offers a close-knit academic community with global reach. QSS is an interdisciplinary program that integrates modern statistical, computational, and mathematical tools with social science questions. QSS has three tenured or tenure-track faculty and a steering committee across the college’s departments, including Mathematics, Government, Public Policy, the Geisel School of Medicine, and Tuck School of Business. Members of the department have collaborative connections across campuses. Fellows should be highly motivated to engage with colleagues across multiple disciplines. In addition, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students are supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Dartmouth is committed to academic excellence and encourages the open exchange of ideas within a culture of mutual respect. People with different backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives make the Dartmouth community diverse, which enhances academic excellence. In addition, we value applicants who have a demonstrated ability to contribute to Dartmouth’s undergraduate diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as the Women in Science Program, E. E. Just STEM Scholars Program, and Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (ASURE). Applicants should state in their cover letter how their research, teaching, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitment to diversity in service of academic excellence.

Qualifications:
