JOBSPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Facilitates the flow of patients through the emergencycare system, ensuring timely evaluation according to the healthcare needs of the patients.
- Demonstratesknowledge and skills in the care of the emergency departmentpatient under the direction of the Team Lead/Charge Nurse.Considers principles of emergency care while assisting the RN toformulate an appropriate plan of care for the patient.
- Documentation is consistent, complete, thorough andlegible.
- Patient care is administered based onHospital and Departmental specific standards of care andpractice.
- Involves the patient and/orsignificant other(s) in the patient’s care. Education/instructionare provided specific to the patient’s health care needs and agerequirements.
- Physician orders are carried outaccurately in providing direct patient care within scope ofpractice. Assures that other departments are notified of orders andservices are needed.
- Licensed Paramedics andLPN may: administer ACLS drugs, SQ/IM and oral medications uponorder of the physician or by ED protocol with the exception ofadministering: IV cardiac drips, thrombolytics, blood products,antibiotics or insulin.
- May assist with codeblue situation and traumas upon request of charge nurse or EDprovider.
- Notifies the RN/Team Lead and/orphysician of changes of patient status as appropriate.
- Considers age-related factors/limitations in theeducation of patients. Applies knowledge and principles ofage-related factors appropriately in teachingsituations.
- Ensures patient’s right to privacyand confidentiality.
- Assumes responsibilityfor the care of assigned patients. Patient care activities areorganized and prioritized.
- Contributes to thesmooth functioning of the Unit by offering help to other staffmembers. Assists with patient care functions beyond those assignedwithin the Paramedic scope of practice.
- Provides accurate and pertinent patient informationreports to the RN and/or Team Lead, and to the oncoming shift toensure continuity of care.
- PerformsUnit-specific responsibilities such as crash cart checks andcleaning of equipment and work areas
- Performsvenipuncture, lab draws, initiates an IV line, completes careinterventions once competence has been determined.
- Prepares patients for surgical and other invasiveprocedures.
- Maintains competencies required byHospital, Unit and position.
- Maintains safe,effective working knowledge of equipment.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the crash cart,emergency equipment and code procedures.
- Performs basic life support (CPR) whennecessary.
- Takes into consideration thespiritual, psycho-social, cultural and religious preferences of thepatient and family when participating in care.
- Demonstrate understanding of and compliance to all safetyprotocols and procedures.
- Organizes andmaintains cleanliness of patient rooms and workenvironment.
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONALEXPECTATIONS:
- Demonstrates communication skills necessary to interactwith persons of varying age and/or cultures.
- Answers telephone as assigned, routes calls or takesmessages appropriately.
- Supports the Missionand Philosophy of the hospital and the Department.
- Demonstrates an understanding and application of hospitalpolicies.
- Respects confidentiality.
- Utilizes chain of command appropriately to resolveissues.
- Promotes an environment in which thepatient care team can work cooperatively towardobjectives.

- Consultsother departments as appropriate to provide and collaborate inpatient care and performance improvement activities.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized andfunction well under stressful situations.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes workwithin designated time.

- Wears ID badge while onduty, with name and face visible.
- Comes towork on time and completes work within designatedtimeframes.
- Maintains standards ofprofessional society procedures and ethical behavior.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperativeworking relationship with physicians, departments, andstaff.
- Effectively communicates to personneland encourages interactive departmental meetings anddiscussion.
- Attends required department meetings,in-services and educational programs.
- Attends a minimum of 50% of staffmeetings.
- Attends a minimum of 50% of all inservices.
- Follows up to read or findinformation on missed meetings and in services.
- Completes annual education within one month ofEOD.
- Provides education to staff onperformance improvement. Ability to plan and organize orientationand in-service training for unit staff members. Participates inguidance and educational programs.
Completes annual review of mandatory requirements withinone month from employmentdate.
