Overview

The HVAC Controls Mechanic (In Training) performs tasks in support of a wide variety of HVAC Controls maintenance activities.  The incumbent performs assigned duties under direction of Supervisors and Senior DDC Controls Technicians; and maintains good standing in the program by successfully completing all training and on-the-job requirements related to the program.  At the completion of the two-year program, the HVAC Controls Mechanic (In Training) will be promoted to Senior DDC Technician.  The incumbent always follows University rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.)

 

HVAC Controls Maintenance and Repair Operations:

  • Assists in effectively and safely performing a wide range of HVAC Controls related tasks, including the troubleshooting, repair, restoration, and modification of campus HVAC Control Systems and associated equipment in accordance with the under-instruction program.
  • With guidance, carries out routine HVAC Controls work such as preventive maintenance testing and inspections. 
  • Performs additional assignments including overtime, after hours, special events and emergency call in work. 
  • Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards. 
  • Utilizes a Computerized Maintenance Management Software program to fully document work activities. 
  • Performs work safely and follows all university safe work rules and practices.

Training and Education:

  • Through teamwork, observation and listening, the HVAC Controls Mechanic (In Training) will continue to develop through practical trade experience.  Supplements practical trade experience by attending defined training and learning programs and other related educational and instructional courses.

  • A qualified journey level HVAC Mechanic or Electrician.
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalency (GED).
  • Must have a technical aptitude for learning HVAC Controls trade skills.
  • Possess journey level knowledge of the potential occupational hazards connected with electrical and building systems control work along with the associated safety standards and practices which should be applied.
  • Possess the ability to effectively follow directions in a consistent and effective manner.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the under-instruction program.
  • Must possess an understanding of safe work practices in a trade shop environment, and follow all shop safe work rules, procedures and practices.
  • Able to follow the department’s customer service standards.
  • Possess the ability to learn and understand technical documentation related to the HVAC Controls technical field.
  • Ability to read and interpret both electric and mechanical (including automatic temperature control) drawings and technical manuals.
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with others.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to learn computer basics and be able to work with the department’s software programs.

  • work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
