JOB SUMMARY

Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is seeking to fill a visiting professor position in the Department of Biology at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor beginning January 2025. The successful candidate may be considered for a full-time appointment in the 2025-2026 academic year. Applications will be reviewed immediately and continue until the position is filled.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Primary teaching responsibilities include field biology and environmental science courses, which contribute to the department’s environmental science major. Courses include general ecology, environmental sustainability, comparative vertebrate anatomy, and others related to the applicant’s research or specialty.
  • The ideal candidate would also contribute to the SNU semester study abroad program in Costa Rica by:
  • Teaching a field biology course.
  • Leading research projects in Costa Rica that would involve undergraduate students.
Other responsibilities include serving as the SNU representative to the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies, student advising, and SNU committee service.Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Southern Nazarene University is an expression of the Church of the Nazarene.   • An understanding of the importance for diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • The candidate should have M.S. in biology or a related field to suit the position's teaching responsibilities.
  • The candidate must be committed to pursuing academic excellence and enthusiastic about interacting with students.
  • A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in a Christian liberal arts university in the Wesleyan tradition.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biology or related field.
  • Teaching and post-doctoral research experience are strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated field research.
  • Other desirable qualities include an aptitude for using online technology to facilitate learning (e.g., online teaching experience, flipping the classroom, etc.).

Supervision Received:

Receives supervision and work assignments from the Biology Department Chair.

Supervision Exercised:

May be responsible for the coordination of work assignments for student employees.

THE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

SNU offers B.S. degrees in biology, biology-chemistry (as a joint major with the Department of Chemistry), and environmental science. SNU Biology, including all labs and offices, is housed within the West Science Building and the Department of Chemistry. SNU is committed to offering the quality and variety of coursework to prepare students for successful admission into graduate and professional programs.

In addition, the Biology Department utilizes the Quetzal Educational Research Center (QERC) field station in Costa Rica, a 4000 sq. ft. laboratory, classroom, and dormitory complex situated on a 400-acre site along the Savegre River in San Gerardo de Dota. SNU and the biology department maintain and staff the facility while coordinating visiting research scientists and student education groups and conducting a spring semester study-abroad program through QERC.
