Position OverviewThe Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas invites qualified individuals with teaching experience to submit application materials for part-time and/or full-time, temporary and/or regular introductory lab teaching positions and introductory lecture course teaching positions. Lecturers will be selected from this pool when positions to teach introductory physics labs or introductory lecture courses become available. These are non-tenure-track members of the faculty whose primary role is instructional. The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Starting Date: Beginning of semester or summer session, depending on need.
Length of Appointment: Semester or summer session, depending on need.
Job DescriptionJob Duties for Teaching Lab Sections:

Lab sections are expected to teach up to three intro lab sections as scheduled. This position is responsible for teaching laboratory sections for the following courses: PHSX114, PHSX115, PHSX216, PHSX236, or PHSX316, and meet with individual students by appointment or during office hours to provide assistance as requested/needed.

1. 30% Teach labs. Perform teaching duties in accordance with the instructions of their supervisors, departments, and/or schools and in adherence to University and Board of Regents policies. Hold classes at the assigned times and places. Adhere to departmental approved course outlines or syllabi, use approved text and other instructional materials, and meet with supervisor upon request. Administer lab activities in accordance with instructions of supervisor, department, or school.
2. 30% Grade weekly lab reports according to the lab report rubric. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student grades in Blackboard.
3. 20% Maintain office hours and assist individual students in the Physics Tutoring/Help Room.
4. 10% Weekly lab set-up. Set-up and check equipment for that week’s lab. Discuss lab procedure and expected outcomes.
5. 10% Correspond with students about labs/lecture assignments. Other duties as assigned.

Job Duties for Teaching Introductory Physics Lecture Courses:

Part-time lecturers are expected to teach up to six credit hours, and full-time lecturers are expected to teach up to twelve credit hours, of introductory physics classes per semester, as scheduled.

1. Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
2. Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours per week.
3. Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
4. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
5. Adhere to departmental, College, and university policies.
Required QualificationsRequired Qualifications for Teaching Lab Sections:

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references.

1. Masters in physics or related field by the date of appointment or a BS and at least 2 years’ experience teaching physics or related science at the University level.
2. Successful completion of the lab course(s) to be taught.

Required Qualifications for Teaching Introductory Physics Lecture Courses:

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references.

1. Ph.D. in physics or related field is expected by the date of appointment or at least 5 years’ experience teaching physics or related science at the University level.
2. Effective teaching of Physics at the undergraduate level, as evidenced by work history, curriculum vita or cover letter.

Preferred QualificationsPreferred Qualifications for Teaching Lab Sections:

1. Effective teaching of Physics at the undergraduate level, as evidenced by work history, curriculum vita or cover letter.
2. Previous Physics teaching experience at the college or university level.
3. Evidence or testimony regarding excellent teaching ability at the university level.

1. Previous Physics teaching experience at the college or university level.
2. Evidence or testimony regarding excellent teaching ability at the university level.
