Duties of Position: Provides leadership for the long and short-term planning and implementation of teaching, learning and distance education initiatives related to student success. The Dean provides leadership for the Academy for Teaching Excellence; provides coordination for the program review process; and leads efforts for continuous improvement in practices and strategies related to teaching and learning. Dean assists with teaching and learning initiatives and projects and reporting related to teaching and learning.

General

Provides direction and leadership for the Academy for Teaching Excellence and is responsible for the planning and assessment of all programs and services offered by the Academy for Teaching Excellence.

Supervises and evaluates staff of the Academy for Teaching Excellence and provides direction and oversight for all operational Academy teams.

Provides direction and oversight for project and planning teams that are responsible for successful implementation of Orientation Week, New Adjunct Faculty Orientation, Adjunct Faculty Teaching & Learning Conference, Faculty Retreat and Communities of Practice. Coordinates the planning of Opening Week activities for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Collaborates with the faculty Chair of the Academy to lead regular department meetings.

Develops and administers the Academy for Teaching Excellence operating budget, including making recommendations for capital, technological and facilities needs in the Academy for Teaching Excellence and to support teaching, learning, and distance education across campus.

Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with division deans, department chairs and coordinators.

Faculty Development and Engagement

Collaborates with the faculty Chair of the Academy, deans and department chairs/coordinators to assess faculty development needs, set and assess annual goals and develop and implement faculty development programming, services and resources.

Ensures that faculty development initiatives and programming are driven by faculty needs, aligned with the College strategic plan and associated goals; and considers input from the Faculty Development Committee.

Provides leadership for disseminating the work of faculty and promoting Academy events and services through the Academy for Teaching Excellence website, newsletter, and other institutional vehicles.

Instructional Design and Technology

Provides leadership to support improvements, maintenance and technical support related to the College LMS and other instructional technologies.

Provides leadership for the development of Academy programming and events, dissemination of resources and delivery of services such as project requests and teaching consultations.

Convenes weekly Instructional Design Team meetings.

Advocates for new instructional technology or expansion of existing instructional technology and monitors usage of instructional technology licenses to ensure fiscal stewardship.

Distance Education Quality and Support

Provides leadership for all existing and developing distance education initiatives in collaboration with the Distance Learning Manager, other administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure consistent practices and procedures.

Provides oversight and recommends improvements for the distance learning course development process and ongoing course design review process.

Ensures compliance with faculty contracts related to qualifications and processes associated with distance learning.

Provides leadership for the implementation of new instructional modalities (e.g. Hyflex) including the creation of professional learning programs and course development processes.

Adjunct Faculty Support

Supervises the processes for classroom evaluations of adjunct faculty. Assigns members of the Instructional Design Team to conduct evaluation follow-up meetings with the purpose of impacting classroom instruction. Communicates with deans and department chairs/coordinators to ensure that classroom observations are conducted.

Provides leadership for professional learning programming that supports the Level II Adjunct Faculty Engagement program; serves as ex-officio of the Level II Candidate Evaluation Committee

Establishes practices and procedures designed for the continual improvement of services to adjunct faculty including New Adjunct Faculty Orientation, Adjunct Faculty Teaching and Learning Conference, evaluation process, shared workspaces and communication.

Serves as a member of the Human Resources / Adjunct Faculty Union Relationship Committee

Additional Responsibilities

Coordinates the annual program review process for departments and programs including offering informational sessions, serving as a resource, and providing operational support as necessary.

Identifies and coordinates professional development opportunities for program coordinators and department chairs related to the program review and course level assessment process.

Responsible for the successful administration of Student Opinionnaires of Instruction (end-of-course surveys). Ensures that reports are shared with division deans and appropriate non-tenure evaluation committee. Works to improve student response rates and support faculty in incorporating student feedback into their practice.

Works collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Outcomes Assessment and the Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction to ensure compliance with ICCB, IAI, and HLC requirements for program review, student learning outcomes assessment, and other reporting requirements.

Assists Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction in reports associated with HLC Annual Report, Quality Initiative Project, and Accreditation.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Associate Provost of Curriculum and Instruction

Educational Requirements: Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Community College Leadership, Teaching and Learning, or, in a discipline represented by one of the Divisions at the College.

Experience Requirements: Two years’ minimum teaching experience in higher education and progressively more responsible experience in an administrative capacity as a department chair, program coordinator, or similar academic leadership.
