Department Summary:
MITRE’s Human Language Technology (HLT) Department works across the full range of US Government agencies to provide language processing solutions to address complex mission needs for our sponsors. Our work provides opportunities to apply language processing solutions to real-world challenges and to research and prototype new methods to address mission needs. We are looking for highly motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to perform research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration in the field of natural language processing capabilities. We are looking for expertise in areas such as large language models, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine translation, speech processing, information extraction, knowledge base population, cross-language information retrieval, identity matching and other areas of human language technology.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Group Leader (GL) is the first line supervisor passionate about the growth and engagement of our staff members. The GL is the point of contact on HR and career development matters for the technical staff in their Group, a mentor and management resource for all department members, and a partner with the other L133 managers in performing a variety of tasks such as hiring, maintaining the Department’s web presence, managing professional development of Department staff, and helping to set the strategic agenda for the HLT Department.The Group Leader will be a first line people and technical leader, who:
- Supervises, advocates for, and mentors technical staff in the group as the primary point of contact (POC) for advice, growth, and performance discussions.
- Participates in formal career development and performance management activities for their direct reports, including guiding the development of impactful goals, having regular clear conversations, soliciting feedback from work leads, according to the processes set out by the corporation.
- Contributes to and/or leads HLT-related projects.
- In performing these roles, the Group Leader for HLT will collaborate with project leads and the broader department management team to assign the right staff to projects, identifying and supporting staff development needs and desired growth areas, and conducting regular performance and developmentconversations.Thelevel of effort for these management duties is expected to be approximately 10%; thus, it is expected that the successful candidate will spend 90% of her or his time on technical contributions to direct or indirect projects.
Basic Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of 8+ years of impactful work experience with a Bachelor’s degree incomputer science, engineering, linguistics, or related disciplines; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Demonstrated recent experience with large language models and start of the art natural language processing technologies
- Demonstrated experience inprototyping/developinghuman language technology components and/or systems
- Experience with programming languages such as Java or Python
- Ability to work independently to learn new technologies, methods, processes, frameworks/platforms, and systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate challenging technical concepts to both lay and expert audiences
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance
- Ability to form rapport with people from different backgrounds
- A keen interest in learning about and rapidly responding to new problems across a variety of domains
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, linguistics, or related disciplines
- Track-record of successful deployment of HLT systems or components that have been used by customers or stakeholders outside of a lab/experimental setting
- Active DOD security clearance
