Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and also strive to provide service, leadership and transitional student support for UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of Student Success Initiatives, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, and the Multiliteracy Centers.

Position Summary:

The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for delivering comprehensive advising to an assigned caseload of transfer students from the point of admission, intention to enroll and through their first semester. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Transfer Initiatives, the advisor will support first-term/first-year transfer students and will partner with academic units on the transition of those students to faculty advisors in time for registration for their second term. As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, UNCG has a strategic focus on diversifying our faculty and staff to reflect this growth and better support our emerging student population. This position has been established as part of UNCG’s strategic focus on diversifying our faculty and staff and providing support our growing Latinx student population. Staffing culturally responsive and informed academic advisors who understand Latinx students’ experiences is essential to addressing our equity goals and supporting students in overcoming disproportionate academic achievement gaps.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution and a minimum of 2 years of experience contributing to student success initiatives in a higher education setting;
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Experience working within the field of academic advising or in developing and implementing services/initiatives to support college student transition, success, and retention.
  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing Latinx and other marginalized student groups
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to multi-task and balance multiple priorities or projects in a faced-paced work environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office, Ellucian BANNER)
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a professional environment.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of academic disciplines and administrative units.
  • Strong organization skills, ability to handle multiple tasks, establish work priorities, respond to unanticipated student or faculty needs, and work well as part of a team.
  • Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university.

Key Responsibility:

Academic Advising

Essential Tasks:

  • Advise an assigned caseload of transfer majors or academic recovery students, depending on evolving student demographics and academic needs.
  • Provide supplemental advising assistance to students related to major/minor exploration and/or degree requirements, financial aid appeals, course selection, graduation plan tutorials, etc.
  • Counsel students on creating action plans in response to academic flags raised in Starfish, UNCG’s early alert system.
  • Serve as an on-call advisor to support other advising center’s drop-in hours
  • Respond to queries from students, faculty, staff, and parents/families as appropriate (within the parameters of FERPA)
  • Refer students to appropriate campus and academic resources for additional support.
  • Support the transition of advisees to their assigned major advisors during their first semester of enrollment.

Supplemental Advising and Support

Essential Tasks:

  • Provide supplemental advising assistance to students related to major/minor exploration, academic or financial aid appeals assistance, course selection, graduation plan tutorials, etc.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Transfer Initiatives Team and the Division of Student Success; as well as other university service partners focused on the advancement of transfer students.
  • Maintain detailed records of student interactions utilizing Starfish, UNCG’s early alert and connect platform. These records include session notes, appointments, and any recommendations or connections to other university service partners.
  • Use Starfish to raise and clear relevant flags and referrals for students.
  • Monitor engagement and flags for participants of Transfer2Transfer mentors and document outreach in response to those flags in the Mentor Collective platform.
  • Create and maintain (as requested) departmental and/or divisional advising, registration, and appeal-related resources.

Program Development and Implementation

Essential Tasks:

  • Actively engage in and support outreach initiatives spearheaded by the Transfer Initiatives Team and/or in the Division of Student Success to support students’ retention, progression, and degree completion; in response to midterm grades, DFW outreach, registration outreach, retention outreach team efforts, pre-registration, early alert flags, etc.
  • Support the advisement of prospective transfer students during partnership events with community colleges and support special events and projects as requested.

Collaboration with Campus Partners

Essential Tasks:

  • Collaborate with divisional offices and campus partners to facilitate relevant workshops and participate in campus events and initiatives that focus on admission, orientation, retention, course completion, graduation, and career entry of transfer students; as well as other relevant opportunities to that provide academic support services to the Hispanic student population.
  • May be assigned to an area of specialty such within the division to support Latinx bilingual populations in order to provide support, as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned, within your scope of practice, with some evening and weekend work required to support the requirements of the division.
