Duties

As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, your typical work assignments may include:

  • Performing PET imaging procedures using brain and body scanners with a wide variety of positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals to study organ perfusion, metabolism, receptor function, tumors, etc., in Clinical Center patients.
  • Drawing, calibrating and administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients; positioning and monitoring subjects to obtain accurate scans.
  • Obtaining blood samples manually or with automated equipment for radioactivity and biochemistry analyses.
  • Recognizing changes in patient situations (e.g., inability to remain in scanner, need to obtain images from non-standard levels) that require modification of standard operating procedures in order to obtain adequate PET studies with data that yield useful information.
  • Operating computer software on different PET scanner/computer systems including image acquisition, attenuation correction, image reconstruction and display, region of interest analysis, production of metabolic images, and data transfer and archiving, and scanner calibration.
  • Recognizing errors or technical abnormalities in images, blood radioactivity measurements, and blood analysis measurements, and taking action to correct equipment or software malfunction.
  • Participating in the execution of PET clinical and research projects in patients under the direction of staff physicians.
  • Ordering and maintaining the necessary supplies for clinical use as required.

Qualifications To qualify for a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, GS-0642:

You must have:
(1) successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the credentialing standards described in 42 CFR Part 75 that is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education,
AND

(2) be certified as a radiographer in Nuclear Medicine.

The following meet the above standards:

1. Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

2. Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

Additional Qualifications:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Performing PET imaging procedures using brain and body scanners with a wide variety of positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals to study organ perfusion, metabolism, receptor function, tumors, etc.; drawing, calibrating, and administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients; operating computer software on multiple PET scanner/computer systems; and operating ancillary PET equipment, including computerized gamma well counters.
